Stoker

(2013) ****1/2

With the sudden, unexpected loss of her wealthy father, India Stoker barely has time to mourn before her long-absent Uncle Charlie shows up to offer support.  Charlie quickly ingratiates his way into the family by charming India’s mother (Nicole Kidman) and by making anyone who questions his motives disappear.  India, who was very close to her father, is skeptical about Charlie despite his generosity and protectiveness.  As India navigates the difficult social hierarchy at school she begins to respect Charlie and his methods for dealing with difficult people.  Eventually she learns that her parents have been concealing family secrets in an effort to protect her.  These secrets eventually catch up with the Stoker family and the consequences are dire.

My description does not in any way do this film justice.  Stoker deals with complicated, nuanced emotions, evil, and the dangers of keeping secrets.  Directed by Park Chan-Wook (Old Boy), Stoker has the look a feel of ‘Let the Right One In’.  In one of the reviews I read about this film someone likened it to a vampire movie without a vampire.  Stoker is a slow burn which makes the sudden bursts of violence all the more shocking.  Beautiful, crisp cinematography, superb acting and a chilling, moody story makes Stoker a must see.  You guys will love it!

Sounds awesome! I've never even heard of this. Nicole Kidman can do creepy well, I loved her in The Others.
