Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones

(2014) ***

When Jesse’s strange neighbor, Anna, dies in the apartment below him, he gathers some friends to break into her place to investigate. Unfortunately they (literally) bite off more than they can chew when they learn that Anna was heavily into black magic. Jessie’s grandmother refers to Anna as a “bruja” (Spanish for witch). The next morning Jessie finds bite marks on his arm and throughout the course of the film he begins to develop supernatural powers. Those who have closely followed this clever franchise know that Jessie is being pursued by a coven of evil witches.

Remember when The Brady Bunch attempted to spin-off their popular show with ‘Kelly’s Kids’? No? Losers. It didn’t work. Throughout the entire episode you kept thinking, “Where the hell are the Bradys???” Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones might be considered a distant cousin of the Paranormal franchise. Although there are cameos of characters from the previous 4 installments, this film moves the story outside of L.A. and is set in heavily Hispanic Oxnard, CA. During the final 10 minutes it links up to the other films in an interesting and satisfying manner. Many of you have brushed off this franchise but I would highly recommend watching all of them in a binge. Although the mythology of what’s going on is being doled out slowly (e.g. X-Files), the franchise as a whole is telling a very compelling story involving demonic possession, witches, and things that go bump in the night.

Did Cousin Oliver make a cameo?

what's the biddy quotient for this series, JPX?

Oh, you biddies can totally handle it. It's gore-free. The "scares" are very subtle.

I only got up to three - but I have enjoyed the franchise. This is the fifth, correct? (Being lazy...)

I'm glad your enjoying these films but I'm gonna pass. Every one I've ever watched has bored me to tears.

That second pic reminds me of The Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz where the laws of physics no longer apply!
