Jordan takes the "grandfather's car" thing to the next level: HOT WHEELS!
That's right, it's the Mattel (R) Hot Wheels 1999 edition (and 2002 Re-Issue) of the 1936 Cord 810 5-Passenger Sedan. (Exactly the car I showed in my exhibit.) The same toy and casting marketed twice in two different Mattel (R) Hot Wheels series. The earlier edition ties in with the ACD museum; the other one is part of a historical series.
I had these on my mantelpiece and hadn't looked at them in a while. I have to say: they're pretty good! Especially for 1:64 scale models. Amazing that they can mass-produce this shape at such a tiny scale, so accurately.
Anyway, Yay! Hot Wheels Cords!

That's so cool! I was all excited thinking I could get one for Jake, then I looked at the dates of issue. Oh well, I'll show him the picture...
I haven't been able to get on the blog all morning, I was being blocked for some reason. Jordan, I'm confused, is that real? Did you grandfather really get his own Matchbox car? If so, why are we only hearing about this now? That's just the coolest thing I've ever heard. Our grandfather was part-inventor of the conveyer belt, but that would make a lame toy.
"Part-inventor?" Wow, that sounds like a decent setup for supervillainy, what with the simmering resentment from not being the sole inventor.
Except... I guess the nefarious schemes would always hit the same snag. "My Super Laser beam is only half finished! Curses! I wish I could invent a magnesium extraction cooling system so I could finish it!"
Yeah, the Hot Wheels cars are dayamn cool. Are the actual toys different from each other, or is that a trick of the light? (Blister card plastic is a good visual distorter, even when you're holding the thing in your hand.)
It's 100% real; it's the same toy twice; they're still available. I'll find out more.
My grandfather was a coal miner, so I can just take any action figure and roll it around in the fireplace, put a little beer in it's hand...presto! Grandpa!
Jordan, seriously, that is about the coolest tribute I can imagine for anyone remotely involved in the car business. Let us know where they are and I will definitely take one!
octo, the toys are actually different, but only in terms of how they're painted. The older one is more accurate. It has the chrome "stone shields" on the fronts of the back fenders. Also, the 2002 edition adds yellow rings on the wheels, which don't correspond to the real car. Beyond that, they're the same.
The packaging is good. The new one has lots of biographical and historical data, while the old one focuses on hyping the museum (since they did a tie-in promotion and that's the edition I got that year).
These are all over the place at my grandmother's house. I think I'm going to try and snag a few more, next Christmas.
