From ew, Universal Pictures is working on Major Matt Mason, a live-action movie based on the 1960s and 1970s Mattel action figure, which is being developed as a starring vehicle for Tom Hanks, Variety is reporting. In the mythology of the original toy, Mason was an astronaut who led a space station-based team that visited the moon. Hanks has participated in several space-themed projects, including Apollo 13 and From the Earth to the Moon. Mattel is already at work on film versions of He-Man and Hot Wheels.
