Super Bowl weekend is typically a slow one for Hollywood, but female audiences drove a horror film and a comedy to the top spots at theaters.
The Messengers claimed the No. 1 spot with $14.5 million, according to studio estimates from box-office trackers Nielsen EDI. The ghost film, whose audience was 53% female, met most expectations.
Because I Said So, the comedy with Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore, was second with $13 million. Because was even more female-driven, with women making up 82% of the audience.
"It's a good weekend for counterprogramming," says Rory Bruer, distribution chief for Sony Pictures, which released Messengers.
T
he spoof Epic Movie dropped 56% from its debut to take third place with $8.2 million. Night at the Museum continued its astounding run, fourth with $6.8 million. The Ben Stiller comedy has done $225 million in seven weeks. Smokin' Aces was fifth with $6.3 million.
Ticket sales dipped 13% from the same weekend last year. Final figures are due Monday.

Good for the Pang brothers! I'll have to check that movie out.
I've always like Penelope Ann Miller, too. I was bummed when she stopped getting the babe slot and started getting cast as Mom, but work is work. Let's not forget she was in Relic.
