DCD had me laughing out loud with some of the following haikus:
You dreaded to hear,
"Hey Muscles!" You knew hard work
was coming your way.
In the eyes of Burt,
Not family or close friend?
You're a horse's ass.
Leaving on a trip,
"Like a herd of turtles in
a mud storm, we're OFF!"
The runner-up is turn-of-the-century AC. She almost won it all with this dark haiku:
my mom tells white lies
she must think she's fooling us
she's fooling herself

Congrats DCD I knew you had it when I read:
Leaving on a trip,
"Like a herd of turtles in
a mud storm, we're OFF!"
Then admitting that you use that yourself right after. Great stuff, I couldn't stop laughing.
My other favorite came from Mr. AC:
Harvey Fierstein
With a touch of Bea Arthur
That is my mom's voice
So friggin' funny :)
Great job all around though, everyone was on their game. Great topic Whirly.
congratulations dcd! so much delicious material.
whirlygirl, thank you for the honorable mention. my mom pulled a whopper this very week, so your topic was timely.
catfreeek, the sad truth is that mr. ac's haiku is strictly factual.
Thanks so much, Whirly!! I accept this award in honor of my Dad, without whom I never would have had such a goldmine's worth of material to choose from.
Is she a heavy smoker AC?
useta be catfreeek! excellent detective skills.
Man, I'm glad I quit. My voice is low enough, LOL.

Congratulations, DCD! I knew ya had it!
Great topic there, Whirly! I hope Okemo was fun! I miss that damn cabin!!!
Well played, "Muscles"! Looking forward to your next topic. You've had some great ones in the past.
When we were in vermont we went to a few antique stores and found that picture of "turn of the century" AC - AC are you sure she's not a relative?
i'm pretty sure at the turn of the century all my ancestors were in eastern europe... creepy!
Late congrats to my sister!
I had actually texted her about this topic and then sat down to find she'd already scooped me on a number of our father's primo "Burt-isms."
Well played, young one. Well played.
For the record, I don't think DCD ever personally suffered from the designation "muscles," or the dreaded coal stove instructions. I could be wrong.
