Actor Corey Haim dead at 38

From nydailynews, Eighties teen idol Corey Haim died Wednesday morning of an apparent drug overdose, according to Los Angeles police.

The Canadian-born actor, who starred in "The Lost Boys" but was probably best known for his roles with fellow actor Corey Feldman, was 38.

He was found unresponsive at his Oakwood apartment around 3:30 a.m.,according to KTLA-TV. His mother was at the apartment at the time of his death.

The actor, who has struggled with drug addiction, was pronounced dead at Providence St. Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank.

Police were called to the hospital just before 4 a.m. to investigate his death.

Police sources told CBS Haim's death appeared accidental. Haim has been in and out of rehab and starred in a reality show with Feldman in 2007 called "The Two Coreys."

He talked about his struggle with drugs - specificially prescription drugs.

"I started on the downers which were a hell of a lot better than the uppers because I was a nervous wreck. But one led to two, two led to four, four led to eight, until at the end it was about 85 a day - the doctors could not believe I was taking that much," he told a reporter in 2007.

"And that was just the Valium - I'm not talking about the other pills I went through."

Haim's official website was last updated on Jan. 18 and promotes his upcoming film, a thriller titled "American Sunset."

Wow. I'm not sure how to react because in one way that's sad and in another way it's not such a big surprise, which is then sad in its own way.

85 valium in a day? Jeepers!

St. Joseph's is where I had Zack. So close. Amazing to think people are suffering right next to us in their own private hells, even when they got to be famous.

Aw, man. That sucks. Octo hit it on the head I think. Sad in a myriad of ways.

Strangely enough, when I was 1st AD on that movie in LA last summer, they put me up in the Oakwood, which has its own deli/convenience store.

One night, I was buying beer (surprisingly), and the guy next to me in line slaps my arm and goes, "Hey man! How you doin?" Like he totally knew me.

I've never seen this dude before in my life, and clearly I went into "mistaken identity" mode of "Hey man, what's happening?" He and I realized our mistake subconsciously during the initial few sentences, but never actually vocalized anything. Awkward all around.

I made a fairly quick exit, and it was only on the way out that it struck me - That dude totally looked like Corey Haim. I wonder...

At the same apartment complex that very weekend was a huge seminar on child acting, and what the ins and outs and pitfalls of the whole thing were. Corey Haim was listed as one of the speakers. I didn't think he lived there, but between the chance rendezvous, the child-acting seminar, and the report that he was found in his "Oakwood" apartment, seals the deal for me. I totally met Corey Haim while buying beer. Right before he died.

I suppose my overall feeling on the matter is...ehhhhh. Wish I could care, but really kind of don't. Sad that he's totally dead, though.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a bunch of people at a high school reunion -- which happened to take place just a few weeks after Kurt Cobain's death. So inevitably a clump of people were talking about Kurt Cobain and the passing of "an era" and what it all meant. This went on until finally this one guy Adam, who might have been the smartest person in my high school graduating class, and who had since become a shrink, said, "The only thing Kurt Cobain's death 'means' is that people in privileged positions don't get the medical help they need."

I feel exactly the same way about Corey Haim. I mean, who couldn't fucking see this coming? Including his goddamned best friend (the other Corey) going on MTV with him all the time etc. And yet it still happened; he still got all the way to the end of that road without anyone stopping him. What a fucking waste.

I agree. Where was Corey's village? I feel the exact same way about Lindsay Lohan, who will inevitably die young.

Handsome Stan, I was also in the Oakwood this summer, visiting a friend. So I think the guy you saw buying beer at that convenience store must have been Zack. We were in there getting sandwiches before a dip in the pool.

And Jordan, yeah, it's tough, but isn't it true that no matter how much help people get, they have to help themselves, or whatever?

Julie, that's a good point. I think it's partially true. One thing they always say about assisting people in recovery (interventions etc.) is that they make it very, very hard for you. But the basic concept (as I see it) is 1) They're not really in control of what they do and 2) they're probably going to die, like D-E-A-D, which is the other side of the coin you've got to look at when you consider giving up on the person because they're so difficult. If Corey Haim was a friend of mine, and I'd passed my limits of dealing with his bullshit one too many times or whatever and walked away, I would feel bad that he died and I would have real problems not feeling responsible even though "I did everything I could" etc.

HandsomeStan's story makes me think two things:

First, clearly Stan met Corey Haim twice, he just forgot about the first time.

Second, clearly Corey Haim was faking that he knew Stan so he could get a free beer.
