Interesting, innovative approach. I know we can safely rule out those of us with "Y" chromosomes.

(or is it the other way around? I can never remember...50, check the Bear Dick Punch comments for something weird...)

And I'm pretty sure it ain't me on that tape. Congrats Octo, I'm pretty sure. Sort of sure.

The other day Whilrygirl called me inquiring, “Do you have any embarrassing photos of [Octo]?” When I asked why she noted that Octo had won HHD and in keeping with the spirit of the “embarrassing” moment’s theme she was hoping for something that fit the category. I had some photos but nothing too incriminating. Later, by chance, I stumbled upon my answering machine cassette tape from my college days. It was a trip listening to old messages from 20 years ago. As I was listening I was tickled to hear Octo’s voice leaving me a message circa 1989. Although more cute than embarrassing, I thought it would be apropos for Whirly’s winner announcement.

Octo was so good to me when I was in college. While he was in New York City I was living in the middle of Upstate New York with little contact with the outside world. We had a tiny one-screen movie theater, a bar, and a smattering of useless mom and pop shops. Octo kept me connected to the world by sending me comic books and toys. There was more than one message from him on my cassette, but this one made me laugh the most because of his, “I was playing this very wild game of Pictionary” comment – what could that possibly mean? He also alludes to “Freddys Nightmares”, which was a terrible anthology series hosted by Freddy Krueger.

The biggest surprise was the lack of reaction to the brownie batter and singing videos, now that’s embarrassing! Congrats, Octo!

I want to know what the winning haiku was Whirlygirl!

That was a great topic but I had trouble composing haikus. I think it's because I'm pretty good at erasing embarrassing moments from my memory.

Thanks Whirly! JPX, you jerk!

That's pretty hilarious. When I heard it I had to ask Julie over to confirm it was me, because of course the way my voice sounds from in here is different. Also, it's twenty years old! Listening to that I feel like my speech habits have changed, at least a little bit.

And thanks for the "cute" comment, JPX, but I'm feeling a little sheepish about "wild game of Pictionary." Do you know what year that was exactly? I suspect 88-89 school year, because I mention a party downstairs and junior and senior year I lived on the first floor.

The weird thing* about the brownie batter video is that JPX actually says "Whirlygirl" to the camera instead of calling her by name. Did you know this was going to be posted, or do you guys talk in 'net speak when you're hanging out?

*(By which I mean of course the weird thing besides seeing a human being meticulously strip all the sweetness from that bowl like an orangutan who just found a log full of grubs.)

Oh I've been calling her 'Whirlygirl' long before Whirly became part
of Horrorthon.  I've used it so much over the years that this is how I
refer to her at all times.  It gets embarrassing in public at times
when we're in a store and I forget to switch back to Maria.  Many
times I've yelled, "Whirlygirl!" and then cowered with embarrassment
when others look over at me.

I had no idea that she was filming me while I was eating that batter,
I thought she was taking pictures, which provoked my (gayish) outcry.

As near as I can figure that answering machine message is from October
1988.  Freddy's Nightmares debuted October 88 and you mention trying
to find it on television in both of the messages I have on my tape.

Boy, Freddy's Nightmares turned out to suck!

As usual there were a ton of superb haikus, but after much deliberation, I finally chose the following trio of haikus from Octo. It was the last line of the last haiku that particularly sealed his win. It still makes me laugh.

At basketball camp
"Friend" burns my ass with lighter
Leaves scorch mark on shorts

During discussion
Cut fart in gymnasium
200 boys laugh

Then while we exit
They all point out the scorch mark
They said 'twas the fart

Whirlygirl said...

And I’m very happy that no one thought my singing and terrible boy cut were embarrassing.

Octopunk said...

I knew I was onto something with "'twas" and "fart" in the same line. All hail syllabic constraints and the art they foster.

Octo, your basketball camp stories always made me laugh.  I just think it’s funny to imagine you playing basketball, I can’t imagine anything you’d rather do less!

DKC said...

Congrats, Octo! It took me a few seconds in my head to confirm that it was you.

I'm with you, JSP - and said as much to the Mr - I think I've had those memories surgically removed!

DKC said...

Oh, and Whirly? Next time you want embarrassing pictures of Octo, just give me a call!

Two can play at that game...

Yay, sibling humiliation!
