Komodo dragons kill Indonesian fisherman

From cnn, An Indonesian fisherman has been killed by Komodo dragons after he was attacked while trespassing on a remote island in search of fruit, officials said Tuesday.

Komodo dragons kill their prey with an extremely toxic bite.

1 of 2 Muhamad Anwar, 32, bled to death on his way to hospital after being mauled by the reptiles at Loh Sriaya, in eastern Indonesia's Komodo National Park, the park's general manager Fransiskus Harum told CNN.

"The fisherman was inside the park when he went looking for sugar-apples. The area was forbidden for people to enter as there are a lot of wild dragons," Harum said.

Other fisherman took Anwar to a clinic on nearby Flores Island, east of Bali, but he was declared dead on arrival, he added.

Komodo dragons, the world's heaviest lizards, can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) in length and have a toxic bite that they use to kill prey such as buffalo, returning to feast when the animal succumbs to the poison.

Despite their ungainly appearance, the carnivorous reptiles can run as fast as a dog in short bursts, jump up on their hind legs, and kill animals with a blow of their powerful tails.

Attacks on humans are rare, but Monday's incident is the latest in a series in which the monster lizards -- which have forked tongues and fearsome claws --have killed or injured people.

Last month a park ranger survived after a Komodo dragon climbed the ladder into his hut and savaged his hand and foot. In 2007 an eight-year-old boy died after being mauled.

In June last year, a group of divers who were stranded on an island in the national park -- the dragons' only natural habitat -- had to fend off several attacks from the reptiles before they were rescued.

Park rangers also tell the cautionary tale of a Swiss tourist who vanished leaving nothing but a pair of spectacles and a camera after an encounter with the dragons several years ago.

An endangered species, Komodo are believed to number less than 4,000 in the wild. Access to their habitat is restricted, but tourists can get permits to see them in the wild within the National Park.

All visitors are accompanied by rangers, about 70 of whom are deployed across the park's 60,000 hectares of vegetation and 120,000 hectares of ocean.

Despite a threat of poachers, Komodo dragon numbers are believed to have stabilized in recent years, bolstered by successful breeding campaigns in captivity.

On Monday, a zoo in Surabaya on the Indonesian island of Java reported the arrival of 32 newborn Komodos after the babies all hatched in the past two weeks, the Jakarta Post reported.

Cool, I Want Some: Darth Vader Money

From geekology, This is the way money looked a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Or, I dunno, as imagined by DeviantArt user Diablo2003. As you can see, Vader opted for a helmet-on shot, which I think we can all agree, was the smart decision. Nobody wants to see your crusty-ass rutabaga head on their space bucks

Real Life Spider-Man Rescues Autistic Boy

From geekology,A quick-thinking Thai fireman came to the rescue recently when he dressed as Spider-Man in order to coerce an 8-year old autistic student off a high ledge.

Teachers at a special needs school in Bangkok alerted authorities on Monday when an autistic pupil, scared of attending his first day at school, sat out on the third-floor ledge and refused to come inside, a police sergeant told AFP.

Despite teachers' efforts to beckon the boy inside, he refused to budge until his mother mentioned her son's love of superheroes, prompting fireman Sonchai Yoosabai to take a novel approach to the problem.

The rescuer dashed back to his fire station and made a quick change into a Spider-Man costume before returning to the boy, he said.

"I told him Spider-Man is here to rescue you, no monsters are going to attack you and I told him to walk slowly towards me as running could be dangerous," Somchai told local television.

The boy came to the masked hero without hesitation (I hope no candy vanners are reading this). Sonchai says the fire department keeps Spider-Man and Ultraman costumes to "liven up school fire drills", and also, "freaky deaky sex". Well PEW PEW to you too, Bangkok Fire Dept.

Tom Hanks circling space saga 'Major Matt Mason'

From ew, Universal Pictures is working on Major Matt Mason, a live-action movie based on the 1960s and 1970s Mattel action figure, which is being developed as a starring vehicle for Tom Hanks, Variety is reporting. In the mythology of the original toy, Mason was an astronaut who led a space station-based team that visited the moon. Hanks has participated in several space-themed projects, including Apollo 13 and From the Earth to the Moon. Mattel is already at work on film versions of He-Man and Hot Wheels.

At least he was honest

From geekology, I can't even count the number of times I've been contacted by Nigerian princes to help move their money out of the country. Unfortunately, I don't keep a bank account because that's just another way the man tries to keep tabs on my brothel me on a short leash. Anyway, I like how the scammer comes out of character at the end with a "thanks man". That was great. Not as great as my love for you, but I have a big heart. And hands. Hey, did you know if your hand is bigger than your face you'll die young? It's true -- you should try it. *SMACK-A-POW* Wow, I can't believe you fell for that. Ha, or when I told you I loved you.

Thanks to Joemo, who once conned an old lady out of her retirement by having sex with her. Gross, Joemo.

I'm laughing already

From iwatchstuff, Their most valuable player is rest in peace! Coming soon to DVD, Blaxwell Smart's directorial debut, Frankenhood:

Motown (DeRay Davis) and Darius (Jasper Redd) work in a morgue, trading put-downs and toiling among the most undemanding of customers. But outside of their decidedly dreary jobs, the two dream of bigger and better things. If only they could win the $25,000 prize that will go to the winners of the upcoming 3-on-3 Streetball Tournament. One night, having been demoted to graveyard shift, they run into their semi-sane colleague Franklin (Charlie Murphy) in a dark alley outside the morgue. They find Franklin using the auto battery of Motown's precious Gremlin to bring to life a monstrous dead man (Bob Sapp) whose heart Franklin has just replaced. That 3-on-3 basketball tournament isn't looking so bad...if they can just get their new mutant friend to play basketball!

If they can just get their new mutant friend to play basketball! Argh! That's always the rub, isn't it? So many Frankenstein Monsters, so few Frankenstein Monsters able to learn complicated rule systems and manipulate their lumbering bodies in such a way to as to become effective 3-on-3 basketball players.

Maybe I'm looking for too much accuracy from a movie called Frankenhood, but don't Frankensteins traditionally have the bolts in the neck, not the temples? That will probably be my one issue with the film when I rent it on May 5th.

Who changed the subtitles for the Let The Right One In DVD release?

From slashfilm, As you already know, one of my favorite indie gems of last year was Tomas Alfredson’s Swedish adaptation of Let The Right One In. The film got a small release in the U.S. by Magnolia’s genre label Magnet Releasing. But I’m sure with only 50 screens (at peak), chances are many of you didn’t get to see the movie on the big screen and have waited until the film was available on DVD/Blu-ray.

IconsOfFright is reporting that the subtitles in the home video release have been drastically altered from the theatrical release. While the new subtitles still relay the same basic information, they appear to be horribly dumbed down, and missing much of the dark humor of the original release. The site has taken screen captures of some of the the scenes, and matched the subtitles up against screen-captures from a 2008 screener.

Here's how it plays at home,

Music... Tuesday (?) Fantasy concert question

I miss talking about music now that we are all trying to write the great American story ending for finish it Fridays, so I hope you don't mind if I post random, music-themed items, concert reviews, or questions every so often. A couple of nights ago Mr. AC asked me casually what one concert or performer I wish I could have seen live. We discussed why the answer was not Woodstock nor the Beatles. That particular evening I went with Hendrix, ideally in a small London club, even more ideally when he and Clapton were jamming together in the mid-late 60s. Mr. AC went with Led Zeppelin back in their early prime, good one.

So let me ask you all the same question: any musician/band/orchestra, living or dead, pick the one show or performer or concert you wish you could have seen! Throw in a rationale while you're at it, I'm all ears. And thanks to Mr. AC for the idea.
