Sony resurrects lame franchise

From dark horizons, "Sony Pictures has picked up rights to classic crime-fighting hero "The Green Hornet" and plans to adapt the story for the big screen."

Hornet" follows the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy who inherits his father's crusading newspaper, the Daily Sentinel. By night he is a masked hero, fighting crime with his sidekick Kato, who has incredible martial-arts skills.

The duo were created during the golden age of radio. Despite comic and film spin-offs, they remain best remembered for the short-lived 60's series with Van Williams & Bruce Lee.

Various attempts in recent years to bring the project to life on the big screen have never panned out, most notably with Kevin Smith helming. At times George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jet Li have been attached at one time or another. Neal H. Moritz will produce, and the project has already gone out to writers.

"Lame franchise" my ass! I just finished watching the 1941 cliff-hangar series Green Hornet Strikes Again (thanks Wondercon!) and I had the time of my life! He went around shooting racketeers with his awesome gas gun. (He HATES rackets.) He survived getting blown up, 2 cars off a cliff, molten lava, getting shot, and driving a car into a building full of explosives.

It's hilarious and very offensive to Asians. (We can comfortably laugh about it now as it's 60+ years later.) Kato is the most obedient, polite and helpful sidekick a guy could ever ask for. ("Shall I tie him up sir?") Kato also constantly hauls ass around town, courtesy of sped up film.

I haven't seen the Bruce Lee version, I don't think it's even available.

Excellent! I'm so glad there's someone in the fold with some experience with this character. I've only ever seen stills, but I've always dug how his costume is just a dark suit and a mask. No time for buccaneer boots!
