Sunshine is hot; bright

Hey everyone! I just wanted to report that I saw Danny Boyle's Sunshine and it's fantastic; the best sci-fi I've seen in years.

It's the good, old cerebral kind of sci-fi they don't make any more, i.e. it doesn't proceed like a comic book. (Not that I have anything against comic books or movies that proceed like them. Like, um, Dick Tracy. Yeah.) It's also a blatantly derivative movie, but since the derivation involves 2001, Alien, Solaris, Event Horizon and Armageddon, that's just fine with me.

Also, Chris Evans ("The Human Torch") totally steals the movie! It turns out he's an amazing, amazing actor and he was just behaving like that because the script says Johnny Storm is an idiot. (See above remarks viz. comic books, etc.)

If anyone's interested I'll write more about Sunshine, but I just wanted to strongly recommend it. (By the way my astonishingly clever title above was intended to convey that the movie is both good and smart.)

That's so funny, Jordan, I was just talking to my father about this movie yesterday. No, I didn't see it yet but we were discussing movies and he said, "Are there any good science fiction movies out now?" I noted that Sunshine was supposed to be good but I didn't know anyone who had seen it yet. Coming from you this is the seal of approval I needed! By the way, Die Hard 4 was a lot of fun!

...and, yes, I want more of a review when you're up to the task!

Like 28 Days Later, Sunshine goes a bit astray in its final act. But so what! The first hour is so brilliant you won't care.

This is really the "best of breed" since Minority Report, in my opinion.

Excellent! We talked when you were halfway through it and I was worried the straying I'd heard a little about would kill it. Yay Danny Boyle.

(Of course any sci-fi movie will stray when hordes of crazy, bloody eyed zombies start running around the ship.)

Yeah, the zombies impede the mission

I met Chris Evans.
Have I mentioned that?

Danny Boyle says Chris Evans has "DiCaprio-level talent" and I totally agree. I would not have said so after Fantastic Four but I definitely agree now.

It's like Don Cheadle: they do what they have to do. Don Cheadle's first movie was Volcano. The movie was laughable, ridiculous...except "that one guy was good. Who is he? Have you ever seen him before?"

Yes, dcd, I think you mentioned Chris Evans's sister getting married in the hotel every time Fantastic Four 2 came up this summer. But thanks for checking.
