so apparently we need to get with the program and obtain a real game console. i hope my fellow horrorthonners will have some strong opinions they'd be willing to share with respect to the relative merits of wii, playstation three, and xbox 360. the last console i owned was an old-school atari 2600 so i have no opinion whatsoever. any thoughts/rants/dissertations appreciated.

I have the Wii and I absolutely love it! I highly recommend it.
Let me elaborate a bit. The Wii is a lot of fun because of its motion-sensor ability, which enables you to do things like swing your arm when you play tennis, or bowl a ball as if you are really bowling. This is a really fun effect that sets the Wii apart from the other systems. Also, you can connect the Wii to the internet and download virtually any Nintendo game ever made. You can design characters to look like you so when you play certain games you can use your own characters (e.g., AC up at bat while playing baseball). However, the other systems you mention are more sophisticated, at least in terms of graphics, and would be ideal for a more serious gamer. My advice would be to go to Game stop (or similar) and test out the different systems. The Wii, if you can find it, is the cheapest of all the systems clocking in at $250. The high end Playstation 3 comes in around $600. I've never cared all that much about videogames so the Wii is perfect for me. It all depends what you're ultimately after. If you ever want to come over to test drive it let me know!
thanks so much jpx for your recommendation and elaboration; we now have a wii!
Hooray, that's so awesome!!! You're going to love it. I have about a dozen games so I can make some recommendations when you're ready.
recommend at your convenience. husband was up most of the night playing games, so it's safe to say the wii is a big hit.
How did you find a Wii so easily? They're virtually MIA in stores - color me impressed!
game stop at the burlington mall had a bunch.
I'm coming in late to this discussion but I give a hearty table-thumping to the Wii also. Jules and I got one last year, and while the only games we have are Wii Sports and Zelda: Twilight Princess, we've had a great time with it.
I'm hoping Julie will catch up to me on Zelda while she's on maternity leave. I sort of blew past her while she was dealing with graduate school.
Wii - Shmee. My weapon of choice these days is the Ms. Pacman Plug'N'Play featuring Ms. Pacman, Galaga and 3 other games! (I haven't tried the other ones yet because those two already provide an endless well of entertainment.) $20 at Target.
thanks for all the feedback, guys!
jsp, we have four plug 'n' plays, including the one you favor. i was satisfied with them, but jonathan really wanted something more up-to-date.
