A little bit more on Trek XI

From darkhorizons, Scribes Alex Kurtzman & Robert Orci ("M:I-3," "The Legend of Zorro," "Transformers"), longtime collaborators with J.J. Abrams, have the tricky task of reinventing "Star Trek" for a new millenium with their work on the film's script. Now, in an extensive interview with MTV, they've gone into some real details about the project and answered some burning questions from fans.

First surprise? The film will simply be called "Star Trek" - no hyphenated subtitles or numbers. The next big surprise is the budget. Trek films have always been fan driven, thus economically shot for very limited budgets which meant at times a noticable lack of action. The aim here is "going for the broad audience to bring people into 'Trek' for the first time".

To do so "there will be more action in this movie than any 'Trek' that's preceded it", likely topping the nearly 2000 starships fighting glimpsed in Dominion War episodes of spin-off series "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine".
Finally they say the film, like "Casino Royale" or "Batman Begins", is NOT a prequel but a reimagining of the franchise. Does this mean a whole new look? "We're not going to start totally from scratch, we want it to feel like it's updated and of the now. That's actually the discussions we're having now: how to keep the look of the universe yet have it not look like nothing's new. It's tricky."

Well, never let it be said that I blanched at the promise of a massive space battle. Some of the stuff that happened towards the end of DS9's run (the battles they mention here) was truly epic.
