Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

(2008; unrated) **1/2

H & K 2 picks up exactly where H & K go to White Castle (2004) left off. The introductory scene displayed potential, contrasting the respective characters of the two stoners as they prepare for a flight to Amsterdam to bring Harold closer to his crush Maria. Things go awry on the flight when Kumar’s homemade airplane-safe bonG is mistaken for a bomB, and the boys are shipped off to Guantanamo Bay. The rest of the movie follows the two friends as they attempt to remedy that awkward “mistaken for terrorists” situation and, of course, win over their lady friends. I did make a conscious effort not to overly disparage the movie by comparison with H & K 1, but H & K 2 was a disappointment just based on what they could have done versus what they chose to do. There were some laughs (high point for me: NPH in a whorehouse) but the ridiculous plot with several elements recycled from the first film really detracted from the funny. If you loved H & K 1 you will probably like this movie, but my guess is you won’t love it.

After reading three awesomely written reviews with little praise of H&K 2, except for JPX, I think I'll skip this film.

the best part of stonerthon for me has been the reactions (inevitably followed by recommendations) that arose whenever i mentioned the project.

I agree with Whirly. This review was the nail in the coffin. Harold and Kumar 2 is officially removed from my Netflix queue and it ain't going back unless Jordan himself convinces me otherwise!

Ugh - I was just reading the comments on jpx's review and remembered the sex scene with the giant bag of weed that was in H&K 2. Yeah - I really didn't like this flick.
