'Tropic' thunders to top of box office again

By Scott Bowles, USA TODAY

Tropic Thunder held off a slew of newcomers — including an unexpectedly strong Playboy bunny — to take the top spot at theaters this weekend.

The Hollywood spoof dropped just 38% from its opening weekend to do $16.1 million, according to studio estimates from industry tracking firm Nielsen EDI. That brings the Ben Stiller flick's haul to $65.7 million.

It was enough to hold off The House Bunny, the Anna Faris comedy that almost doubled expectations with $15.1 million.

The action film Death Race was third with $12.3 million, slightly below expectations.

The Dark Knight remained in the top 5 after six weeks in theaters, doing $10.3 million, raising its haul to $489.2 million.

The animated Star Wars installment The Clone Wars was fifth with $5.7 million, bringing its total to $25 million.

Among the other major newcomers, the Ice Cube comedy The Longshots was seventh with $4.3 million, about $2 million below projections.

The biggest loser of the weekend was The Rocker. The Rainn Wilson comedy did just $2.8 million this weekend, about $6 million below projections and enough for just 12th place.

Ticket sales were down 2% from the same weekend last year.
