This year’s Horrorthon is shaping up to be the most interesting yet. We have new participants and I can’t wait to read the reviews. Given that many don’t necessarily watch a lot of horror movies the question was raised about some movie suggestions. I consulted with JSP and we felt that anyone dipping their feet into the horror genre might start with the following list of films (in no particular order).
Halloween (1978)
The Ring (2002)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Dawn of the Dead (1979)
The Exorcist (1973)
The Omen (1976)
The Evil Dead (1981)
JU-ON (2003)
Dracula (1931)
Hellraiser (1987)
Suspiria (1977)
The Shining (1980)
The Wicker Man (1973)
Jaws (1975)
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Friday the 13th (1980)
Nightmare on Elm St. (1984)
This list is by no means comprehensive, but it's a fairly good representation of the sub-genres found in horror (e.g., ghosts, witches, slasher, etc.)and a good place to sample some of the classic stuff out there.
First rule of Horrorthon is: watch horror movies. Second rule of Horrorthon is: write about it. Warn us. Tempt us. The one who watches the most movies in 31 days wins. There is no prize.

Salem's Lot 1979 and Salem's Lot 2024

(2007) * First of all let me say that as far as I could tell there are absolutely no dead teenagers in this entire film. Every year just ...

love the list. i was hoping this october to watch some horror basics i have neglected over the years, so this'll help a lot.
Great list. I'm going to shoot for a tally of 15. It's going to be tough with the Red Sox making the playoffs again...
Excellent list, you two! I got the emails but I was too busy mucking around to add to it.
Folks, make sure you get the original Ju-On and not The Grudge.
Right ho Landshark. And I'm also looking forward to the Yankees NOT participating in the playoffs. Burn Yankee Stadium to the ground, says I!
Great list. (Of course I'd think that as I helped compile it.) Makes me want watch some disgusting stuff...
Great list JPX/JSP. I feel a little better about October now, I have seen most of these.
I WILL NOT be reviewing The Exorcist. It scares me to death. The Swede thinks it's cute that I will actually skip a channel showing it...not flip by it fast, but actually enter the number of the channel after it...I'm afraid I will see something if I flip.
Quick request. How's about a "Top Five Best" from each of the vets?
johnny, you may be the only person this year who can beat jpx... are you feeling up to the challenge?
miko, your comment made me want to watch the exorcist, which i never have....
if memory serves, jordan reviewed some beauts last year. see his 2007 reviews for more quality notions.
any chance we tighten the leash on posting reviews to within a week or so of the thon being over?
Miko, I am also terrified of the Exorcist. Terrrrrrrrrified!
I didn't always have this fear. I had watched it on video a few times at various ages and was fine. It wasn't until they rereleased it in theaters. To this day I have regretted going into the movie theater that night. It scared the fucking crap out of me like nothing before. I was still screaming for days after. Just the thought of her waking down the stairs like a crab or her head spinning around makes me want to cry. I will never watch that movie again. I'll watch Poltergeist, which I'm also scared of, before I watch the exorcist.
Damn! I have a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach thinking about this movie.
I don't think I could narrow down my top 5. This list doesn't even begin to cover all the good stuff that's out there.
WG, we'll watch The Exorcist this year.
Yes we will.
screw you, jpx!
Other ones to add to the list:
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Now way AC, I have the stomach for the movies but not the review backlog! My prediction is that Catfreek is going to put JPX to the test this year. Octo is all but out as he has a thing that pees constantly vying for his attention. 50Page already admitted that he'll be useless due to his studies. We'll see, we'll see...
I'm with you, JSP, it's almost impossible to keep up with reviews when you have dozens to write near the end of the month.
very well, then, my money is on jpx to win yet again this year!
I don't think you should discount yourself AC, you gave quite a solid showing last year I seem to recall!
I am hoping to double last year's take and make it to 24 at least. Since my Patriots are not looking like they are going to be taking as much of my time *sob* I might be able to do it.
Thanks for the list! I watched two on this list last year. I have seen most of the others, but not for ages - fun to revisit the "Must See's!"
thanks for the vote of confidence dcd, but i watched 20something movies last year and jpx watched 80. i will shoot for 30 this year. :)
Psycho should probably be on any "must see" list too.
Psycho should definitely be on there!
So I have a question, can we write the review right after we watch the movie? I'm a huge procrastinator and I'm afraid that if I wait to write the review I'll never get to it.
The watching is the easy part, I do that all the time. The review thing is what I'm a little worried about.
JX/JSP~Thanks for the list, those are the movies I grew up with so they are near and dear to my heart. I have every one of them in my personal collection, does that mean I can't rewatch & review any of them?
JSP~Every time I think you've answered all my questions more of them pop up *sigh*
catfreeek - I found it best for my part to post my reviews right after watching the movies. (Granted, I only watched 12 movies.) But I am also a HUGE procrastinator and I know if I had left it until "tomorrow" I never would have posted anything!
Thanks DCD and whew!
Kick me off the island, I will never watch the exorcist. :D I watched it when I was 14 and didn't sleep well, literally, for 3 months. :o
