After posting the Horrorthon 101 list below it has been pointed out to me that there are some glaring omissions. After scanning through past Horrorthon competitions I pulled together some additional must-see horror for the novice.
The Thing (1982)
Psycho (1960)
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Alien (1979)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Phantasm (1979)
Re-Animator (1985)
Audition (1999)
Frankenstein (1931)
First rule of Horrorthon is: watch horror movies. Second rule of Horrorthon is: write about it. Warn us. Tempt us. The one who watches the most movies in 31 days wins. There is no prize.

JPX~I posted a couple of questions a few minutes ago on your horrorthon 101 post. Rather than repeat myself, I'd kindly ask if you could flip back and maybe answer them for me.
I feel like Rocky getting ready for his big bout with Apollo Creed. I'm really psyched about this, thanks for nudging me JSP.
Great list btw, more of my favorites.
Catfreek, posting your reviews as quickly as possible is definitely recommended. As many of us will attest, it's very easy to become overwhelmed with the writing process once you watch a few movies in a row.
You inquired about watching films you've already seen before - yes, by all means! Watch whatever you want even if you've seen it a million times. I've reviewed some of the same films over the years and I intend to do so this year as well. Last year I intentionally watched films that I had not seen before.
There are few rules to this contest. Last year, for example, we established a rule about movie length and decided that only 3 movies 60 minutes or less will be accepted. If you have a question about whether or not something constitutes a "horror" movie, just ask. For example, we concluded that Alien is a horror film while its sequels are sci-fi.
Television shows are not counted in the contest although we made an exception for the Masters of Horror series because every episode was directed by a horror "master".
Part of what makes Horrorthon fun is that each participant has different obstacles that make it difficult to watch a lot of films (e.g., Whirlygirl and 50McGee are in graduate school, etc). Also, writing a lot of reviews becomes very taxing and time-consuming. It's the crazy dedication to a meaningless contest that makes it such a joy.
The spirit of this contest is to find a few good horror films. Probably more than any other genre there are a lot of bad films to sift through to find the good ones.
Finally, for a reminder of our rating system go to the Horrorthon Score site to see some rough guidelines (although this needs to be updated).
Thanks so much
JPX that really helps me out a lot!
Audition, really? That one seems more specialized to me. Scary as hell, yes...
How on Earth did we forget Dawn of the Dead? Any list of the top 5 most beloved Horrorthon films has got to include that one.
Yknow what? Just as a fun exercise, let's try to assemble a top 5, in order or not, of what we think collectively are the movies that were the most well received on this site.
I'm thinking:
-Dawn of the Dead
-Hostel
-Ju-on
-Re-Animator
-Wicker Man
how about a bottom 5?
(this would be much easier if the thonscore page had star ratings on it)
-Dragon Wars
-Alone in the Dark
-The entire
-life of
-Lou Diamond Philips
50p, you crack me up.
I didn't forget Dawn of the Dead, silly goose. The first list has the original Dawn of the Dead and I added the remake in the second list because it's a rare example of a horror remake actually being good.
Hey, I'm suddenly able to comment again, woo-hoo!
