
From ew, CNN is reporting that Betty Ford, the widow of late President Gerald Ford and a co-founder of an eponymous addiction center in Southern California, has died. She was 93.
Ford died Friday evening with family at her bedside. Her husband, Gerald Ford, passed in 2006. Nancy Reagan, the widow of late President Ronald Reagan, called Ford “an inspiration to so many through her efforts to educate women about breast cancer and her wonderful work at the Betty Ford Center.”
After leaving the White House in 1978, Ford entered the Long Beach Naval Hospital to be treated for alcohol and prescription painkiller abuse. She helped to open the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage in 1982.
She earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991 and the Congressional Gold Medal eight years later.
