Kevin Smith's sci-fi comic book film?
From filmstalker, Kevin Smith appears to be mulling over the idea of making a science fiction comic book film in the same vein as Flash Gordon.
However there is a big caveat, if his next two films don't do well he thinks he won't get to make it.
Although I'm not a fan of all Kevin Smith's films, I really do like Clerks II (Filmstalker review), and it hit me like a ton of bricks, I had no idea I was going to like it and was actually preparing for not enjoying it.
One of the things I really did enjoy was the dialogue, it was real and fresh as well as being damned funny, and I've often wondered how he could turn his pen to other areas.
Well it looks like we're set to see when he delivers Red State, his thriller/horror type film, and if that and Zack and Miri Make A Porno are successful enough we'll get to see...
"Ranger Danger and the Danger Rangers"
I do think that sounds like a provisional title from the story in Digital Spy, or rather I hope it does, but he promises it'll be in the same vein as Flash Gordon, if it ever gets off the ground.
"[It depends] on what happens with the next two [films]. They might try to stick me in movie jail. But I've [messed] up way worse in the past."
What do you think, Kevin Smith does science fiction, and comic book perhaps campy science fiction too?

Looks like a recipe for disaster. Kevin Smith is too cynical to handle Flash Gordon. Stick to the raunchy New Jersey comedies that use big words but aren't funny or intelligent.
Ok that was a tad harsh. I do like most of his movies. I could've done without Chasing Amy though.
I liked Chasing Amy but Jersey Girl was just horrible. I'd watch High School Musical instead of watching that again.
Ya gotta like a director who will admit that some of his work is fucking awful. It's too rare.
I like Kevin Smith a lot. His writing is great and his stints as Silent Bob are hilarious. If I ever teach a class on animation I will screen Silent Bob sequences. Who else these days relies completely on physical performance and never talks?
In his own movies! Can you imagine how much happier we'd be if Quentin Tarantino limited himself the same way?
Also, the project is "in the vein" of Flash Gordon, so he'll be creating the characters and the story, which has a better chance of fitting the vibe than actual Flash Gordon would. It will probably be like the movie-in-the-movie in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, but a whole movie of it.
I like Smith's stuff, although I thought "Amy" was so annoying in Chasing Amy that I couldn't enjoy the film. I loved Clerks 2, I though it was actually kind of sweet.
I guess the question is whether it's "in the vein of" the 80's Flash Gordon movie or the Buster Crabbe serials.
