Star Trk XI set design secrets
Fromdarkhorizons, Production Designer Dawn Brown ("Ocean's 11," "The X-Files") has been working hard on the J.J. Abrams' directed reinvention of the "Star Trek" film franchise and had some stories to share with SyFy Portal.
"I think a lot of hardcore fans are going to freak out. As far as I know, only the exterior of the Enterprise had to stay the same. I don't know if that came from J.J. or Paramount" she says about the look of the Enterprise in this version.
She admits upfront that "Actually, nothing came out as I envisioned. I am surprised every time I walk on stage. You can read into that however you like."
Much of that seems to be due to the art departments work being replaced by CG sets - "I worked on a very large set on 'Star Trek' that would have been an absolutely fantastic physical build. But it became a visual effects shot instead. My involvement was reduced to marking out blue screens and platforms. We have so many talented carpenters and scenic artists and sculptors, and I have seen some truly amazing sets. It is a shame to trade their contributions for green screens."
Brown is also working as a costume illustrator on Zack Snyder's upcoming "Watchmen" comic adaptation and says of that "Obviously, we are all aware of what Dave Gibbons did. Some character designs are very faithful to the book. Others will be completely different."
Meanwhile "Trek" scribe Roberto Orci has slammed the first script review that was posted up on AICN earlier this week, telling TrekMovie that "Whoever wrote that piece HAS NOT read the script, and I would trust Nimoy to tell us if we know anything about the Trek universe over just about anybody else"
