'Watching the Detectives' Trailer Fulfills Introverts' Fantasies
From iwatchstuff, There's a trend in recent years--done with success in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and less so in Garden State--where the romance of a film is based on the dynamic between a geeky, introverted guy and an eccentric, fun-loving girl. Replacing the long-standing formula of the intellectual trying to date the hot cheerleader, the idea of a relationship with an abundantly quirky extrovert is not only more feasible, it brings along the possibility of "breaking them out of their shell" and allowing them to have wacky, fun experiences without sacrificing aloof cynicism.
Being disgustingly familiar with the mentality, I can tell you with out-of-character confidence that Watching the Detectives looks like a poorly-written thesis on the subject. Each scene goes out of its way to point out what flat archetypes they've created just to fill the ingredients in the formula. Look! Cillian Murphy is living vicariously through movies instead of garnering actual experiences! Lucy Liu is zany and fun-loving, but needs some grounding! I get it. And, despite myself, I'm sort of charmed. You win again, irrational emotion.
And is his name really pronounced like "Killian"? That's not what I've been saying.

Wow. I was actually expecting to be charmed in a low-rent way, but that looks like complete crap.
