25 Bucks and a Hard Shell?

I thought about this when I first realized I had no idea what everyone was talking about on "Music Friday". I will suggest it now after JSP's "De La Soul" post and the response to same.

What does everyone think about a two-song per Horrorthoner "must" buy? Each of us takes two songs we love, put them out there, and the others will buy it and discuss on Friday. I first was going to suggest each person take a Friday and suggest two songs, but who the hell wants to wait until August for their songs?

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.....
Pick carefully (if everyone wants to do this), find the obscure song, band, etc. in your playlists and be ready for others to ridicule your terrible taste. I hope to find some music I have never heard of that I will love. (and I think I may inject a little country in your liberal-ass Ipods...)
Discuss.

Great idea, but I like the one person per Friday version a bit better. Getting 30 new songs every Friday would be tough to keep up with.

Landshark, I was thinking a one time all in, not a recurring one. I couldn't get mama to increase my allowance enough to do 30 songs per Friday!

Oh God, I fear the ridicule!

But still think it's a good idea if we can agree on logistics.

Yeah, I like this.

Miko, that's such a fantastic idea that you could only have borrowed it from me. If we're gonna do this, let's do it right. Howza'bouts we submit our 2 songs this Friday the 13th (Horrorthon nod) and then have a week to buy/digest everything? Then the following Friday we can open up discussion. Personally I would prefer if we could all pick songs that are available on ITunes because I'm always afraid of bathhouse viruses from sketchy sites. Of course that would limit things - no Beatles (or good De La Soul) are available on ITunes yet...

Jordan said...

Beatles should be off limits anyway. The person who would put forward a Beatles song as an "obscure personal favorite" isn't posting on Horrorthon anyway.

Well that's just smashing! How about I take logistical suggestions from multiple sources?

It's on, and it's on now.

Miko564, JSP, Landshark, DCD,and must have their songs in by 5PM PST on Monday June 9th. Octo/Julie may make selections if they can, but don't have to play along. There will be NO comments on song selection allowed until 12:01 AM Friday the 13th (Horrorthon Music Friday).
This gives everyone 4 days to acquire and listen to the selections. You must listen to each song at least once all the way through.
Octo/Julie are the only ones allowed to make song selections and not buy everyone elses music (they may be busy). AC,JPX,I'mnotMarcbutmysboyfriendis,
HandsomeStan,RunningFreak, Whirlygirl and Anas Demens Purpurea will contribute 2 songs each by Monday the 16th (assuming they are playing).
Feel free to explain the reasons for your choice at length, or just let the songs stand on their own merits.
Then let your ridicule fly on Friday! Did I forget anything?

I love this idea! Perhaps at a later date we could each pick one episode from a television series we like that everyone has to check out? Is the spirit of this to choose songs from groups were certain that the everyone else hasn't heard of?

miko564 said...

Not necessarily JPX. I am thinking of some tunes that would be standard for the genre, but that wouldn't be known outside fans of said genre.

(I'm secretly thrilled that the "Godfather" of the blog likes this)

Jordan said...

I hope I'm not the "Tom Hagen" of the blog.

DKC said...

Okay - so the songs don't have to be obscure per se, just songs that we really love and are willing to defend until our dying breath?

Because I kind of think I'm not going to be bringing anything "new" to the table, since I listen to pretty much the same music I did in high school and college. I know, so sue me.

dcd, I think the idea is like this: it's your chance to force people to listen to something you like. You know, the thing you like that you can't get anyone else to pay attention to? Now they have to, so you can put your money where your mouth is and actually engage the friend in a fair fight over whether the thing is good or not. The person who dismisses the whole idea the moment you mention the artist? Too bad. They can't do that any more; they HAVE to listen.

I realize I'm casting this is adversarial terms, but, damn it, that's what this is all about (it's just nice, kind people doing it). Even if it's a John Denver song or an 'N sync song or a Kenney Chesney song you like...you've got my attention: I'll listen. That's the point. All's fair in love, war...and, just this once, music.

DKC said...

Okay - I like that explanation Jordan! So good to have you back!

AC said...

of course i'm in.

miko564 said...

Damn, I edited badly again! My post with the rules should read "and Jordan". I put everyone who had posted a response to that point on for Monday.

You OK with that Jordan?

AC said...

miko, could you clarify your original intent? did you want to collect titles of songs that are obscure and beloved or just have us put our very favorite songs out there regardless of obscurity?

miko564 said...

AC, I think that obscure might be different for some of us. I never heard of the Warhols, until you and JSP starting posting about them. Why not make it the songs you love? If you believe that most people have heard it, or already have it, you can skip it, but I don't think we should put too many rules on the songs. Jordan's description is apt, we all HAVE to listen to it, so pick away...

I like the suggestion of making sure they are available on ITunes. For me, because I'm too tech-ig'nant to figure out other sites.

AC said...

miko, i just love this idea. i've never used itunes but presumably husband can provide tech support (i give "tech ig'nant" a whole new meaning).

since i love to be exposed to new music, and i have already started the process of choosing my two and am finding many possibles, may i also suggest that in addition to posting our two "required" songs, those who wish can supply the names of songs that made the short list but didn't get chosen? this would provide a catalog of songs some could explore at leisure and others could ignore completely.

Landshark said...

Incidentally, it would be pretty easy to just email mp3/wav files of our songs to everyone on a master list. This would be a perfect use of a gmail account if you don't have one yet.

I used to belong to an mp3 email list like that, where a bunch of indie nerds would send out tracks every few days. It got overwhelming, and I found I was just deleting all the messages based on the subject lines: "More Swedish power pop...". But still, it would be perfect for our purposes.

JPX said...

Landshark, I'd love to but that would be like asking me to split the atom =)

Johnny Sweatpants said...

Ok I'm ready. Are we going to talk up our choices from the start or should we just name artist, song and album and explain everything later?

After the dust settles this experiment should at least make for an interesting mix tape.

Don't worry everybody, I'll lay off the KISS as long as DCD doesn't start pedaling that Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch crap again.

DKC said...

Oh JSP - your lust for Marky is so transparent!

Johnny Sweatpants said...

You take that back this second DCD!

Hey everyone - whaddya say each participant agrees to listen to each song at least 5 times, preferably with headphones?

miko564 said...

Crap, I leave the house for a couple hours, after obsessively reading the blog all weekend and there is an explosion of comments on a couple of posts!

Landshark, I am in the same boat as JPX. I can work ITunes, but everything else about MP3's makes my brain bleed.

AC, a "follow-up" list sounds good to me. I may dump some old timey country on your asses, and there are too many classics to pick one.

JSP, 5 listens is fine, I said one in case someone HATES a song, at least they have to give it one full listen.

So tomorrow we will have songs from DCD, Landshark, JSP, Miko564 and Jordan right? BTW the deadline is tomorrow at 8PM EST you CAN post your songs whenever you want...

miko564 said...

P.S. if I have to listen to KISS five times, do I have to buy a black t-shirt to wear whilst I listen?

DKC said...

Hey! If you think of me in those awful glasses all the time, the least I can get away with is accusing you of a man-crush on MM!

Okay - so tomorrow by 8pm - two songs to tortu - ...er, tempt you with.

miko564 said...

DCD, no giant glasses?! Next you'll tell me the earth is flat, and the sun is indeed a flaming chariot crossing the sky...sigh.

AC said...

miko: bring it. you don't scare me.

johnny: i think miko stated above we should do what we like as to explanations or not. by ready, do you mean you have your picks?

i'm no jordan (duh) but i'm wrassling a work deadline myself this week, so any music-themed distractions will be most welcome.

can't wait for tomorrow! no posting our responses until friday, correct?
