OK, I'm under the gun, so here are my picks. Apologies in advance: I have no idea about the itunes status of these songs. If they are unavailable, try their websites, youtube, etc. If you are still stuck I will consult with my technophile husband.
Band: 311
Song: Creatures
Runner up song with a totally different feel: Amber
Band: The Grateful Dead
Song: The Music Never Stopped
Runner up song with a totally different feel: Sunrise
To select the 2 top songs, I went with songs I love, that make me turn up the volume and lose my mind, and that communicate what music means to me. Neither band is obscure per se but I did steer clear of my least obscure favorite bands (Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc.). I will add the short list as a comment so as not to clog the blog. Happy listening all!

They were both on there! This is great, I am driving to a hotel 2 hours away tonight, so the listening may commence!
With the Dead song, would you recommend a live version (Dick's Picks) or the Blues For Allah one?
I mean, obviously a live one, right?
Sorry, couldn't wait for a response, picked one.
thanks for the reassurance miko.
johnny, i think newbies should go with the blues for allah cut. those who have had some exposure could branch out... or should we all be listening to the exact same track?
too late! :)
umm, you couldn't wait more than one minute?
Here's my short list of other tracks i considered choosing:
dresden dolls, coin operated boy
elo, shine a little light
stevie wonder, sir duke
dave brubeck, take five
fischerspooner, emerge
linda ronstadt, you're no good
bill withers, just the two of us
new order, crystal
ella fitzgerald, these foolish things
mama cass, dream a little dream
dave bromberg, such a night
and finally, just as an oddity:
jon and vangelis, friends of mr. cairo
The Music Never Stopped is one of my favorite Dead songs. I haven't listened to it in awhile so I'm psyched.
that's so good to hear, whirlygirl. i pretty much expected the ridicule to begin immediately, so i'm glad to have a momentary reprieve. :)
Funny, ac. That 92 tour was my one and only Dead show. I saw one of the late August dates at the old Boston Garden. I went with some folks I didn't know very well, and I was way too sober. Still, it was a fun show.
I want with the Blues for Allah version because AC suggested it and it was shorter. There were a few versions of the 311 song available as well, so I used the one that had the word "explicit" after it.
Here's my Dead story:
There was a Dead show at Madison Square Garden and I was walking by there for completely unrelated reasons. The streets around it, always some of NYC's busiest, were packed with hippies and cops doing crowd control. As I walked down 31st Street I passed a parking garage jammed with cars trying to get inside, and just as I got there I heard the crashing of breaking glass from inside the building.
I thought "oh man, some poor freak who just wants to park his VW van and get across the street to the show just busted up his wheels and torqued his whole night." But when I looked inside, I saw that a cop had driven his patrol van into a section that was too low, and completely smashed the siren on his roof. Hee hee hee.
wow, landshark! if i had been living in boston then (we moved here in '96) no doubt i would have been at the show.
octo, good call with those two versions, and awesome dead story. happy baby day, by the way! don't play zack the dead too soon or he'll become a republican. :)
i've seen some madison square garden dead shows... not the optimal venue imho. though jerry on broadway was another peak experience. i snuck my way to the very front of the theater, back in the day when that would fly.
the thing with the dead was that i knew the songs so very well and loved them so very much, when they were "on" as a band (and they could sure be "off") the live experience was pure bliss.
The one Dead show I went to was in Vermont. Shortly after I arrived at the show I fainted. It's the one and only time I've ever fainted in my life. It was a combo of walking in the heat for an extended period of time, dehydration, and drugs. It was awful. Before I fainted I went blind for about two or three minutes. That was freakin scary! I had to have my friends grab my hand and lead me off to the side. The next thing I knew people were picking me up off the ground.
I got to go sit with the sick people while they pumped me full of fluids. It was pretty interesting. I was surrounded by people having bad highs. They were quite the spectacle. I liked it there though, it was serene, and I didn't want to leave. I asked them if I could go and come back, but they said, "Once you leave, you can't ever come back." I remember the words ringing in my ear as I frustratingly debated what to do. It was my beautiful oasis that would be lost to me forever the moment my foot hit the other side. (It was also right behind the stage which was cool.) I finally left, found some of my friends and danced the night away.
superscary, whirlygirl. glad everything worked out fine after all.
