JSP – The Bees and Super Furry Animals: I think I’d heard of these 2 bands before, but didn’t know their stuff. First of all, I liked both songs, and I could see myself listening to these two bands. The SFA track is obviously very influenced by Pink Floyd, even down to the spacey imagistic lyrics. After checking our their bio on allmusic, and reading that they are radical lefties who usually incorporate that into their songs, the following verse began to make more sense:
Sold you a Dalmatian,
But the spots fell off,
Pooled them all together,
As a hairy moth,
Bred it with a lion
but it flew away,
Now it chases drones
around the sky;
The whole admin case for the Iraq War is exactly like a spotless dalmation. A spotless dalmation after all, ain’t no dalmation. And Bush is a lot like a hairy moth with the bravado of a lion. Anyway, whatever they “mean,” cool images.
The Bees – “Got to Let Go”: At first I listened to the live version on youtube maybe 3-4 times, and I was convinced that these guys were to the Dead as SFA was to Floyd. But then I listened to the album version a couple times, and I changed my mind. They’re still certainly dripping with 60s nostalgia, but it’s more pop than I first thought. That hook that keeps repeating in the chorus is pretty cool. I expect to hear this song on a Tarantino soundtrack at some point.

Um, "Shit Sandwich" is kind of grossing me out!
D, just in case you missed the tap reference in the title of this post...it's from when Marty DeBurgi is going going over some of the reviews of past Tap albums with the band, and he gets to one and says, "And here's a review for Shark Sandwich, and it's just a two word review: 'Shit sandwich.'"
Anyway, here's my next two reviews:
DCD - Kelly Clarkson and Sara Bareilles .
For me, this is a good example of the rare instance when a performer can take lame material and make it sound really good through sheer talent. Clarkson just has a kickass voice and I love when she belts out the chorus, even if the lines she's singing seem to come from some corporate collection of pop cliches. As an outside observer of the chick pop genre, she seems miles ahead of the Fergies/Christinas/Jessica Simpsons of the world.
Btw, if you aren't on the Kelly Clarkson bandwagon yet, check out this vid of her climbing onstage at some lameass metal show (Metal Skool?). The dudes are complete idiots, but she's clearly buzzed and plays along.

OK, I see in a comment that these guys are a parody group of 80s metal. That makes a bit more sense. And actually, I now see that Metal Skool has clips with all kinds of folks from Jeremy Piven to Jessica Simpson to Pink. Weird. Must be an L.A. thing.
As for Sara Bareilles, this one grew on me on a 2nd or 3rd listen. Simple and straightfoward, but a real nice voice and a clever postmodern/feminist rereading of classic fairytales. This one's more up my alley than the Clarkson one.
Okay, I'd forgotten that Shit Sandwich joke. That's pretty hilarious. Still, kind of a gross thing to keep scrolling past. Not as bad as that tense pencil drawing Miko posted of that guy pulling on his face.
Julie's seen Metal Skool live and loves 'em. Totally an LA thing. As I read your comment to her she was all "what?!" and then "oh, okay." Much like you were in your comment.

George Jones - Just what I was expecting for a guy often named among Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. Drips oldschool country, which maybe seems a bit maudlin in our day, but I like.
"Sell a lot of beer" - I haven't made up my mind yet. Is it a fun country equivalent to Billy Joel's the Piano Man, or a naked and cliched attempt at being "catchy" like some country Nickelback? "There's such a fine line between clever and stupid," if you'll all permit me one more Tap quote.
Octo's tunes!
Cibo Matto and Susumu Hirasawa.
Cibo Matto - I was slightly familiar with these hotties already, a few soccer friends were pretty into them a couple years ago. Also, Julie got me that Gondry dvd for Xmas last year, which has a video he did for CM. Anyway, I think I could learn to like this stuff. Very whimsical and hip--though maybe too hip for me. I kinda feel like I'm not totally "in" on what they're doing. The live show sounds awesome.
Susumu Hirasawa - "Sweeping and layered" indeed. The first half is going along, and the Ray of Light comparison is very apt--there's that similar spacey echo and driving beat. I'm generally not that into techno, but that might be partly because I never listen to it. I can see the appeal here, especially over the 2nd half of this song when it breaks into what sounds almost like African drumming in a few spots.
Anyway, both picks were just what I was expecting from octo, and both were perfect at accomplishing what this exercise is meant to do--expose me to cool shit I wouldn't otherwise hear.
Clearly, I have not watched Tap enough...I know it's like a religion to Landshark.
I'm so impressed by how much research you put into all of this LS! Although what else should I expect from the professor? When you find the time for all this with a newborn and the twins running around I do not know. I can't even get my laundry folded.
landshark is a professor for whom spinal tap is a religion, and i'm only finding this out now?
maybe someday miko's old post about "what darkness lurks" needs to be expanded... like a genealogy with links among those who know each other and a little more real data (even if vague to preserve what blog confidentiality remains).
