Dark Knight derails Pineapple Express

By Scott Bowles, USA TODAY

This is getting ridiculous.

In its fourth weekend in theaters, The Dark Knight remained atop the box office, knocking off another round of newcomers.

The Batman sequel took in $26 million, according to studio estimates from box office trackers Nielsen EDI.

That was plenty to beat the R-rated pot comedy Pineapple Express, which did $22.4 million, slightly below most projections. The $30 million comedy has done $40.5 million since its release Wednesday.

Knight's weekend haul raised its total to $441.5 million, surpassing Shrek 2 as the third highest-grossing movie of all time. By next weekend, it should pass Star Wars' $461 million to become No. 2 on the all-time list, behind Titanic's $601 million.

Knight also became the first movie since 2003's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King to hold the top spot in theaters for a month. Titanic holds that record, as well, remaining No. 1 for 15 straight weekends.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor dropped 60% from its debut to take third place with $16.1 million.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 also fell short of expectations, doing $10.8 million. The film has done $19.7 million since its release Wednesday.

The Will Ferrell comedy Step Brothers was fifth with $8.9 million, bringing its total to $80.9 million.

Ticket sales dropped 20% from the same weekend last year.

If Dark Knight beats Star Wars, I want it to go all the way and beat Titanic, too.
