(2001) *1/2
Take a Lifetime movie of the week, add a handful of music industry cliches, set said movie in the 80s, and you have Glitter, the brainchild of star Mariah Carey. Billie Frank (Mariah) is "given up" by her mother, a talented but troubled singer. Billie has her mom's talent, her orphanage friends, and her orange cat... until she meets "fly" DJ/producer "Dice" and the two form a potent professional, then personal, relationship. As we follow Billie's rise to music stardom, we learn that all that glitters is not gold. Word. I was coasting along not especially loathing the movie until the ending, when the barely-there plausibility took an unnecessary nosedive (three distinct life-altering and highly unlikely events all happen in the same 24 hour period). I do feel bad for Mariah that her highly personal star vehicle was panned so universally (apparently she had a breakdown just before release), but really, she should have known better. Doesn't she watch Lifetime?

Damn AC, I've gotta hand it to you - Glitter & Grease 2 in the same weekend. You seem to be hell bent on punishing yourself but it's not clear why. 'Fess up - what did you do?
i'll never tell, johnny sweatpants!
watching vile movies on purpose has been surprisingly fun (though it has totally ruined my cred with the guys who work at the video store). i have two more steaming piles of crap on tap, but i'm gonna go easy on myself and watch just one more tonight. crapathon!
Dayyyyammm... Glitter? I'll watch Showgirls again someday but I don't think I can ever screen this. For some reason I've never fully investigated, I totally hate that skank.
