50P came up with the idea and with a few contributions of my own assembled a fiendishly great horror-themed mix that is sure to add some much needed devil spice to your life. Not only was I blown away by 50P’s choices (I can’t stop singing Satan Said Dance and the Sneaker Pimps version of the Wicker Man classic is simply astonishing), but the order that he placed the songs make the disc flow like a river of blood. I’ve heard the Doors’ You’re Lost Little Girl many countless times over the years and yet I still felt like I was hearing it for the first time.

The CD’s are in the mail to the usual suspects and hopefully everyone will receive them by Halloween. (Nothing like the last minute.) If anyone else wants a copy shoot me an email!

Again, JSP (although actually 50P) opens my unrefined ears to new music. Except for The Doors and Johnny Cash tunes, I don't think I have heard any of these...
Mommy, is it here yet? How about now? Now? Mommy, I WANT IT NOW!

the idea came to me when i was listening to "i am a vampire" -- "i should make a monster mix, and leave out songs that suck, like monster mash."

in fact, when i mentioned the idea to jsp, the first thing he asked was whether or not monster mash was going to be on it. "not even close"

since then jsp and i have pooled a list of thon related tunes. i've got enough fo at least a couple thons worth, but i'm always on the lookout for more, so if you've got any suggestions, e-mail me or facebook message me.

---criteria---

*gotta be in some way thon related. things that are relevant:

-monsters

-aliens

-brutal murder(ers)

-things that are otherwise halloween related (i'm thinking specifically of "great pumpkin waltz" by vince guaraldi (from the peanuts cartoons))

-instrumental music with a deep sense of foreboding

-instrumental music with an autumnal feel (see "great pumpkin waltz" or something like "three hours" by nick drake) -- if it's got lyrics, they've got to be relevant to the topic (jsp nixed my suggestion of "obscured" by the smashing pumpkins for this reason)

-music, instrumental or otherwise that appeared prominently in a horror film -- doesn't have to be, in and of itself scary, but tunes that are will be given preferential treatment over tunes that don't (jsp suggested "american girl" by tom petty)

*most importantly the song can't, under any circumstances, be played out. this blessedly excludes much of the halloween standards you've had to pretend to like for ages. i've already made my feelings on "monster mash" pretty clear. but, i'm probably never going to include a song like "thriller" not because it's a bad tune, but just because everyone expects it. no fun. ditto "ghostbusters" and "the time warp" --- "werewolves of london" is both played out and not cool.

i'll throw them all into a folder and make my selections from that.

also, i'm always on the lookout for classic clips from horror flicks. in addition to the dotd clip, jsp als sent a second dotd clip as well as a clip from wicker man, which will, very possibly be the lead on next years disc.

also note that the sneaker pimps version of "how do" awesomely begins with a clip from wicker man.

(thanks to octo for finding that gem, which i think is the best tune on the mix.

I'm so excited and I love the artwork, JSP!

One more thing – I’m fairly certain that some of you will be put off by the Warlocks’ sickly vocals, pounding drums (they have two drummers and both are relentless) and skuzzy guitars. My suggestion is to turn the volume up until your ears bleed! This song is as close as one could ever get to making out with a blood thirsty zombie.

I can't wait to get my CD! Artwork is definitely awesome!

...what are these differences you two put aside?

Whirlygirl said...

The deleted comment is mine. I couldn't help myself from saying that JPX sucks, but then decided this isn't the place for that.

For the record, there are no differences to speak of between Fitty and myself. I was just talking shit to raise some eyebrows. I know, that's so out of character for me!

also, the last minute thing was mostly my bad --- just didn't get off my ass and get to the post office in a timely fashion.

pants and i are planning on sending out next years before october.

Johnny Sweatpants said...

I've been listening to this constantly since yesterday and if anything I'm more enthusiastic! I Am a Vampire is definitely my "This Week's Favorite Song of All Time". (Yes, I realize how ridiculous that sounds.)

Whirlygirl I didn't send one to you because I figured you could just swipe JPX's copy. (You have my permission and support.)

Whirlygirl said...

Hopefully that's true, but considering I never gave him the Horror Jams good and bad discs he might decide to hold it hostage. If he does, I have no problem searching his house.

Johnny Sweatpants said...

If you need help, just let me know. (Psst... I know where he hides all of his secret shameful stuff.)

Whirlygirl said...

Nice try, JSP, but JPX doesn't have anything shameful.

Johnny Sweatpants said...

Anyone else want to field this one?

Just want to throw in a "Cool! And hope I am on the Usual Suspects list!"
