Let's all go to the movies!

Over the weekend I purchased a film magazine from 1983 in a small antique shop.  Little did I know that there was 'treasure' within this treasure. Yes, inside was the "entertainment" section from the Providence Journal dated July 24, 1983. Above you can see what fun choices we had at Showcase Cinemas that summer! Although almost all of the movies ended up sucking it's still fun to imagine looking at this ad on a rainy afternoon and trying to choose something to watch.  Let's take a closer look...

'JAWS 3D' - Clearly Jaws 3D was the newest film to join the summer season given how large the picture is in the ad.  This was the time of weird horror 3D sequels (Friday the 13th 3D, Amityville 3D, and Freddy's Dead:  The Final Nightmare come to mind).  Although it ended up being awful in every respect, that damn Jaws ad makes me want to watch it again! It's Jaws, in 3D!

'Twilight Zone: The Movie'. - I LOVE LOVE LOVE 'The Twilight Zone'. The film? Not so much. In fact, it was terrible. The Twilight Zone movie is best remembered as the movie where 3 people (including two little kids) died horrifically during filming when a helicopter crashed on top of them.

'Octopussy' - I love Octopussy for the name and because it's so bad it's great! I love the later Roger Moore 'James Bond' films because he was way too old to play the titular character (pushing 60 in this installment) and it's fun to look at the much younger stunt doubles taking on the heavy work.

'Staying Alive' -  I Love 'Saturday Night Fever"! Say what you want but John Travolta is absolutely brilliant in the film. Sure he's pretty much channeling Vinnie Babarino, but his dancing is unmatched to this day. Don't remember? Check out the video above. Written and directed by Sylvester Stallone, 'Staying Alive' is an absolute turd. In the embarrassing sequel Tony Manero's tries to succeed as a dancer on the Broadway stage. YAWN! A misfire on all accounts (although the Bee Gees contributed a few good songs to it).

'Superman III' -  I love all the recent Marvel movies but back in the day 'Superman II' was the best superhero film ever (wanna fight about it?) which is one of many reasons why 'Superman III' was so utterly disappointing.  Attempting to make a low-budget comedy out of the Superman property was such a misfire that it ruined the franchise.  What's that you say, 'Superman IV:  The Quest for Peace"?  Okay, okay, true, that was even worse.

'Trading Places' - I haven't seen Trading Places in over 30 years but back in the day I recall that it was constantly shown in school when teachers needed to kill time.  Does it hold up?  I have no idea.  I remember thinking it was funny but then again I was just a 14 year old idiot at the time.

'Return of the Jedi' - Sure it had stupid Ewoks and Boba Fett was killed off in the least dignified manner possible, but come on, it's Star Wars!  I waited three long years after Empire ended on a cliffhanger for this and I was not disappointed!

As an aside, I love how the ad states, "Starts Friday, 'Vacation'"!  I wonder at the time if they realized what a blockbuster that would become?

I might add that the small print notes that the matinee price was $2.50.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Will Be An Intergalactic Buddy Road Movie With Thor and Hulk

From slashfilm, Even though the cast has been officially announced, we don’t know a hell of a lot about Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok. We know that the new cast is amazing (Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, c’mon). Cate Blanchett playing the film’s mysterious and powerful new villain Hela gives us some clues. And we also know that Mark Ruffalo will be reprising his role as Bruce Banner and The Hulk for this third installment of the Thor franchise. But we didn’t expect Thor: Ragnarok to be an action-comedy about the god of thunder and a gama-rey exposed scientist traveling across space, fighting evil baddies. According to Mark Ruffalo, thats exactly what the film is.

Mark Ruffalo told Entertainment Tonight at the Now You See Me 2 junket in New York the film is not what you might expect from Thor 3:

“It’s an intergalactic buddy road movie with Banner and Thor. I think it will be smashing. You’ll see a lot more Hulk and I think it’ll–” he began, before co-star Woody Harrelson cut in to ask if Hulk will be even “Hulk-ier” this time around. “The Hulk gets Hulk-ier. The Hulk Hulks out. Hulk-ier and bigger.”

Marvel head Kevin Feige has often said that they are not in the business of making superhero movies but movies of all genres: Guardians of the Galaxy was a space opera, Captain America: Winter Solider was a political conspiracy thriller, Thor 2 was a fantasy epic, Ant-Man was a heist film, and Spider-man: Homecoming is supposed to be a John Hughes-style high school movie. I love the idea that its an intergalactic buddy road movie with Banner and Thor.

Ruffalo also Cate Blanchett joining the cast as Hela, saying that she plays a “mysterious and powerful new villain” who comic book fans will know as The Death Queen.

“She plays the worst of the worst. So evil,” Ruffalo teased. “She is going to kill us. It’s such a great part she gets to play.”

Meanwhile, Karl Urban talked to IGN about joining Thor: Ragnarok as Skurge The Executioner, an Asgardian who in the comics fell in love with the Enchantress and was frequently used in schemes by her and the trickster god Loki, and is known to sport a magic double-bladed battle axe.

“I read a fantastic script that was action-packed and full of great characters. When I heard who was involved — and the cast list dropped yesterday — and [saw] the opportunity to work with [director] Taika Waititi, who I think is one of the most brilliant directors coming through, I made the decision it was something that I wanted to be a part of. And the character is fantastic. He’s got a great arc to him. Obviously I can’t say too much about it, but I’m really thrilled to be a part of the Marvel universe and to be working on Thor: Ragnarok.”

Urban also confirmed that he’s been reading up on Thor comics in preparation for the role, something we’ve seen on his twitter account (see the photo above). I’m excited to see Karl Urban in a marvel movie.

Burt Kwouk, Pink Panther actor, dies at 85

From ew, Burt Kwouk, the British actor known for his roles in the Pink Pantherseries and multiple James Bond films, has died at the age of 85.

Kwouk’s agent confirmed the news to the BBC in a statement, saying, “Beloved actor Burt Kwouk has sadly passed peacefully away. The family will be having a private funeral but there will be a memorial at a later date.”

Born in the United Kingdom but raised in Shanghai, Kwouk rose to fame in 1964 with the release of the Peter Sellers movie A Shot in the Dark, starring Sellers as Inspector Jacques Clouseau. Kwouk played Clouseau’s loyal manservant Cato, who was ordered to frequently and unexpectedly attack his employer to keep him on his toes.

Kwouk went on to reprise his role as Cato in The Return of the Pink Panther (1975), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978), Trail of the Pink Panther (1982), Curse of the Pink Panther (1983), and, finally, Son of the Pink Panther (1993), in which Roberto Benigni played Clouseau’s son.

In addition to multiple TV roles over the years, including The Avengers, Doctor Who, and The Sentimental Agent, Kwouk was also known for appearing in three James Bond movies: Goldfinger (1964),You Only Live Twice (1967), and Casino Royale (1967). Between 2002 and 2010, he appeared on the long-running BBC series Last of the Summer Wine as the electrician Entwistle.

In 2011, Kwouk was awarded an Order of the British Empire for his contributions to drama.

New ‘Halloween’ Sequel Set Up at Blumhouse, John Carpenter Executive Producing

From slashfilm, Legends never die. After years of Dimension Films trying to figure out what to do with the Halloween franchise, the company lost the rights to the iconic horror series that started with John Carpenter‘s classic film. Out of nowhere a surprise announcement came from Blumhouse Productions revealing that they are teaming with Miramax to co-finance a new Halloween sequel. Before you get all bent out of shape about the franchise not knowing when to die, director John Carpenter will be on board the film as executive producer.

Find out more about the Halloween sequel after the jump.

Joining John Carpenter for the tenth film in the Halloween franchise will be Malek Akkad from Trancas International and, of course, Jason Blum, the producer of The Conjuring, Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister and The Visit.

John Carpenter’s work on Halloween has influenced horror for decades, and the filmmaker is ready to help usher in a new era for Michael Myers, “38 years after the original Halloween. I’m going to help to try to make the 10th sequel the scariest of them all.” It’s strange that Carpenter counts Rob Zombie’s two Halloween movies as sequels even though that was basically a franchise reboot. In reality, this will be the eighth sequel.

All these years later, Halloween is still one of the most terrifying slasher films of all time, and maybe we’ll finally get a contemporary sequel worth talking about. Halloween H20 did its best to revive the franchise (parts of it hold up, but it’s nowhere near as good as the original) and even seemed to finish it. But it was such a big hit, that one more sequel just had to be made.

Personally, I think the only good Halloween sequel is Halloween II, especially since that’s when we find out that Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) is actually Michael Myers’ sister. But Jason Blum thinks they can finally create a new sequel worthy of the Halloween name that fans will love:

“‘Halloween’ is one of those milestone films that inspired everyone at our company to get into the world of scary movies. The great Malek Akkad and John Carpenter have a special place in the hearts of all genre fans and we are so excited that Miramax brought us together. We cannot wait to find and collaborate with the right filmmaker to give ‘Halloween’ fans the movie they deserve.”

The question is who that filmmaker could be. My vote goes to It Follows helmer David Robert Mitchell. His movie had plenty of influence from the original Halloween but existed in a contemporary world. He seems like the perfect person to bringHalloween back from the dead.

Blumhouse and Miramax are aiming for a 2017 release but no date has been staked out yet.

Box Office

From ew, The proof is in the pudding: movies based on smartphone apps cantop the box office, as Sony’s The Angry Birds Movie dethronesCaptain America: Civil War with an estimated $39 million.

In what was arguably the most competitive weekend at the 2016 box office thus far, Sony’s The Angry Birds Movie vaulted to the No. 1 spot rather handily, breezing past newcomers Neighbors 2: Sorority Risingand The Nice Guys as it exceeded Civil War’s third weekend haul by nearly $6 million. Still, Civil War became Disney’s third 2016 film to top the $300 million mark, as its domestic gross now stands at $347 million with worldwide numbers totaling roughly $1.053 billion. Year-to-date, the domestic box office is up 5.8 percent from 2015.

At 3,932 locations, The Angry Birds Movie was the weekend’s widest new release, besting Neighbors 2’s count by nearly 550 screens. The Universal comedy sequel grossed significantly less than expectations, which had the film on track for an opening in excess of $30 million. Its predecessor earned $49 million across its first weekend frame on the way to a $150 North American total.

Though Neighbors 2’s opening numbers underwhelmed, summer comedies typically have longer legs, and even the worst-reviewed of the genre (Vacation, Tammy) have overcome modest mid-year openings on their way to solid domestic totals in the recent past. With a so-so B CinemaScore grade and better-than-average reviews, Neighbors 2 faces very little competition in the near future, as the next major comedy to open is Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping on June 3, giving Seth Rogen and company a shot at a healthy second weekend with minimal runoff. With its target audience (college students) out of class for summer break, Neighbors 2 should have little to worry about in the coming weeks.

The Nice Guys, Warner Bros.’ critically-acclaimed buddy comedy, debuted to a solid estimated $11.27 million, slightly exceeding expectations, which initially pegged the film for a $10 million debut. The Ryan Gosling/Russell Crowe film premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival earlier this week, earning raves for the on-screen chemistry between its stars, and its opening weekend audience skewed under-35. Though critics lauded the film, audiences weren’t on the same page, as The Nice Guys earned a lukewarm B- gradefrom CinemaScore. Either way, Warner Bros., taking on little risk after acquiring domestic distribution rights to the film, is looking at a healthy run for the picture thanks to the inherent likability of its leads.

May 20-22 weekend box office estimates:
The Angry Birds Movie - $39 million
Captain America: Civil War - $33.1 million
Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising - $21.79 million
The Nice Guys - $11.27 million
The Jungle Book - $11 million

Outside the top 10, still in limited release, Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster continues to impress in the specialty market, soaring to $408,000 on excellent word-of-mouth as it expands to 24 locations for a cumulative total of $1.038 million. A24 is planning to release the Colin Farrell-starring film wide on May 27.

Kevin Smith is developing a Buckaroo Banzai TV series

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension

From slashfilm, Kevin Smith is looking to bring the eighth dimension to the small screen.

EW can confirm that the Yoga Hosers and Clerks director is developing a TV series based on The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, the offbeat 1984 sci-fi film that starred Peter Weller as a genius scientist, experimental race car driver, and rock star who saves the world from reptilian aliens.

During the latest episode of his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, Smith said the project came about as a result of his recent gig directing an episode of The Flash, which has “has opened up weird doors” for him. One of those doors, he said, led to a potential Buckaroo Banzaiseries with MGM, which owns the rights to the property. (A spokesperson for the studio declined to comment.)
SEE ALSO

Smith is a longtime fan of Buckaroo Banzai, describing it as “one of my favorite movies in the world and largely responsible for the weird s‑‑‑ that I make, because that movie was supposed to be one thing but it did it in another way. It just did it very off-center.”

Written by Earl Mac Rauch and directed by W.D. Richter, the original film is indeed a genre-bending romp, lacing its sci-fi antics with campy comedy delivered in a deadpan tone. The cast also included John Lithgow, Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum, and Christopher Lloyd.

As for how he’d approach the adaptation, Smith said, “Basically, you just do the entire movie for season 1, and then season 2 you finally do the sequel we’ve all dreamed about, Buckaroo Banzai Versus the World Crime League.” The latter story was teased in the end credits of the original film but never realized.

Box Office

From ew, Though Money Monster debuted to a solid $15 million gross over its first three days of release, the race for the weekend box office throne wasn’t even close as Captain America: Civil War led for the second week in a row with an estimated $72.56 million.

Dipping 59 percent from its $179 million debut, Civil War fell slightly harder than its predecessor, The Winter Soldier (59 percent to 56 percent, respectively), but after 10 days of release, the third installment is already the top earner ($295 million domestic and counting) among the Captain America film series. Comparably, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which also featured an ensemble cast of Marvel superheroes, similarly slipped 59 percent from its $191 million premiere in 2015, though Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceplunged over 69 percent after its $166 million opening in March.

Accounting for Civil War’s most recent weekend gross, the film now stands at $940 million globally, which brings the Marvel Cinematic Universe past the $10 billion mark after releasing 13 films over the last nine years.

Despite losing 174 screens, Disney’s The Jungle Book ensured the studio held the top two spots at the box office for the second weekend in a row, adding an estimated $17.76 million to its domestic total, pushing the adventure picture past the $300 million mark after five weeks in release. As of May 15, The Jungle Book has grossed an estimated $840 million worldwide.

Following a lukewarm critical reception (but a sustained standing ovation at its Cannes premiere on Thursday) Sony’s Money Monsterpremiered in third place, marking star Julia Roberts’ highest opening weekend in over four years with an estimated $15 million from 3,104 screens, finishing just shy of the $18.1 million debut of her Mirror Mirrorin 2012. It’s also the highest gross across a weekend frame for director Jodie Foster, whose biggest box-office success as a filmmaker remains Little Man Tate, which grossed $25 million ($34 million, adjusted for inflation) in 1991.

After rising from $8 million to $11 million across its first and second windows, Garry Marshall’s Mother’s Day dove way down to an estimated $3.26 million this weekend for a No. 5 finish, bringing the film’s cumulative total to roughly half of the $56 million opening the director’s first holiday-themed romantic comedy, Valentine’s Day, grossed in 2010. Rounding out the top 5 is Blumhouse’s The Darkness, released under the new BH Tilt label as part of the production company’s ongoing experimental model involving an inexpensive, digital-heavy marketing campaign aimed squarely at attracting die-hard genre fans to select titles. The strategy seems to have paid off, as the film opened at the top end of modest expectations to the tune of $5.19 million (with a 53 percent female, 55 percent under-25 audience base) despite a low C grade on CinemaScore.

May 13-15 weekend box office estimates:

1. Captain America: Civil War - $72.56 million
2. The Jungle Book - $17.76 million
3. Money Monster - $15 million
4. The Darkness - $5.19 million
5. Mother’s Day - $3.26 million

Outside the top 10, in limited release A24’s The Lobster, which debuted at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival before traveling the fall festival circuit with stops at TIFF and the NYFF, scored $188,195 from four screens, with a $47,049 per-screen average. This makes the film the highest specialty opening of 2016 thus far, ahead of both Midnight Special ($38,002 from five screens in March) and Green Room($29,328 from three screens in April). The Lobster will expand to more theaters throughout the month, opening in wide release on May 27.

Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell Will Never Be ‘The King of Kong’ Again

From slashfilm, I can’t believe it’s been nearly a decade since The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters was released. Seth Gordon‘s now-classic documentary chronicled the world of arcade gaming championships, with the main storyline focusing on the feud between a Redmond, Washington high school teacher named Steve Wiebe who attempted to break Billy Mitchell‘s record score in Donkey Kong. The film has become one of my favorite movies, and since its release we’ve followed the story as the championship title got passed among other gamers and back to Weibe again in 2010 for a short time before a plastic surgeon named Hank Chien took the title.

But it now seems that the story of the Donkey Kong championship may have come to an end, and neither Steve Wiebe or Billy Mitchell will ever be the King of Kong ever again.

Wes Copeland has completed what many believe to be a perfect run in Donkey Kong. Last week the video gamer submitted a score of 1,218,000 in the classic arcade game. This not only makes Copeland the new Donkey Kong world champion, but many believe it will cement his name in that title forever. Apparently that score is considered to contain all the points possibly available in Donkey Kong, making it the highest possible score. Dean’s score was obtained on the MAME platform, a arcade emulation version of Donkey Kong.

The score has been thought by some to not actually be attainable on an original Donkey Kong arcade cabinet. Of course, there may be some trick in this 1981 game that has yet be be discovered, and if that’s the case:

I can just see the headline now, that Billy Mitchell becomes the only man who will find it and possibly achieve a score higher than the “perfect score.” But as fun as that might be it probably won’t happen. The score has been submitted to Twin Galaxies, the official scoreboard for arcade gaming, but has not been “officially adjudicated” just yet.

“This will be my last record score,” Copeland wrote on Facebook. “I don’t believe I can put up a game any higher than this.”

Congratulations to Wes on this incredible achievement. Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell have not commented publicly about the new score although Mitchell has retweeted the news on his twitter account:

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ apparently sucks

From slashfilm, Captain America: Civil War only just debuted, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is still in theaters across much of the country. But with six (count ’em) major Marvel and DC adaptations out this year, there’s no time to waste. So buzz is already building on 2016’s next big superhero showdown, X-Men: Apocalypse. The first reviews are in, and critics have a lot to say about Bryan Singer‘s latest entry in the mutant franchise. Get the X-Men: Apocalypse early buzz after the jump.

Variey’s Geoff Berkshire:

If you’ve seen one cinematic apocalypse, you’ve seen them all. At least that’s the feeling conjured by “X-Men: Apocalypse,” the latest entry in one of the more reliable comic-book franchises around, this time disappointingly succumbing to an exhausting case of been-there-done-that-itis.

THR’s Todd McCarthy:

Narratively jumbled and jammed with so many characters that you give up keeping them all straight while simultaneously lamenting not seeing more of those you might actually want around, Bryan Singer’s fourth entry in the enormously profitable series he inaugurated 16 years ago undeniably builds to a cataclysmic dramatic reckoning. But mostly it just feels like a bloated, if ambitious attempt to shuffle as many mutants and specially gifted characters as possible into a story of a resurrected god ready to take over the world.

EW’s Chris Nashawaty:

It’s not all bad, though. There are some funny in-jokes, like a swipe at the terrible X-Men 3 (aka Last Stand). Turner is promising as Jean Grey, and Evan Peters’ Quicksilver gets another super-slo-mo showstopper scored to Eurythmics’ period-appropriate synth-jam “Sweet Dreams.” But all in all, Apocalypse is a third-tier X-Men movie that arrives at a time when studios and filmmakers who traffic in spandex need to be at the top of their game. We know all of the clichés and all of the tropes too well at this point to settle for place-holding mediocrity. We know the difference between an instant classic and a dog. Apocalypse isn’t quite a dog. But it is a movie with way too much of everything except the things that should matter the most—novelty, creativity, and fun.

TheWrap’s Alonso Duralde:

With “X-Men: Apocalypse,” however, Singer seems to have acquired a new mutant power of his own: Monotony. Whether it’s the lack of an interesting villain, or the fact that the series’ time-travel element is forcing these mutants to meet each other (and the audience) all over again for the first time, this latest entry marks a shocking letdown from Singer’s earlier contributions; what once soared now slogs.

Indiewire’s David Ehrlich:

Most importantly, the character of Apocalypse galvanizes these last three X-Men movies into an actual trilogy rather than a cynical hodgepodge of contractually obligated blockbusters — the first X-Men series asked who we are, and this one deepened that inquiry by asking what we must make of ourselves. “Apocalypse,” for all its faults, has the audacity to make the MCU look small, and the conviction to make the DCU — if there even is such a thing — look foolish for confusing self-seriousness with gravity. If only these characters were allowed to be as complex as the ideas they fight for, “Apocalypse” could have represented a new beginning for superhero cinema. It’s one thing to show Magneto destroying Auschwitz; it would have been quite another to show him rebuilding it.

The Playlist’s Russ Fischer:

While a well-intentioned idea, ‘Apocalypse’ spends so little time delivering meaningful action, the story still feels flimsy and ineffective. Real talk between characters is rare, with the mutants all speaking in aphorisms and monologues, like they’re perpetually campaigning in an election. Singer attempts to add dramatic heft to these lines by slowly pushing into close-up as Important Ideas are uttered, but you’d care a lot more if the film convinced you that their fates might truly turn on any event.

HitFix’s Drew McWeeny:

So, yeah, what works best is the individual moments. Fans of the films and/or the comics will all find lots of little nods and callbacks that should make them happy. There are some key moments that fans will want to discuss and dissect in fine detail, which is always a good sign. These movies all feel like one big ongoing movie to me at this point, and I don’t mean that as a negative. If you buy a ticket for X-Men, you’re going to get X-Men. You’ll see some of your favorite characters handled in a new way, and you’ll see promises for things that they could do in future films.

ScreenCrush’s Matt Singer:

it’s quite possible no actor has benefited less from his involvement in these X-Men prequels than Oscar Isaac. As a general rule of thumb: When you cast one of the most handsome and charismatic actors on the planet, don’t put him beneath 50 pounds of latex and blue paint and have him give a one-dimensional performance of hissing and screaming and arm waving. Completely unrecognizable in his makeup and armor, Isaac never gets a chance to use any of his many gifts as a performer; almost anyone could have played this part. Apocalypse can look cool on the page, but in live-action he seems kind of silly. His mutant abilities are vague and the way he sets out accomplishing his goals don’t make a whole lot of sense. (With all that power, what’s he need with the Horsemen? Just destroy everyone already!)

New York Daily News

After sixteen years working with the characters, it’s obvious Singer knows them well enough to mix and match from different eras of the comics and still make it work as a cohesive story. The relationships between the characters also transition well from the comic page even with so many new actors in the roles.

At times, it feels like Singer is trying to fit as much as humanly possible into this movie, just in case it’s his last. By the time it gets to the climactic showdown against Apocalypse, it’s obvious what an unstoppable force he is, and everything leading up to that point does pay off.

Comic Book Resources’ Kristy Puchko:

Sifting through the pieces of “X-Men: Apocalypse,” it feels poorly reverse-engineered. People like Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, and Storm, right? Let’s bring them back but younger. Jennifer Lawrence has tons of fans, so let’s bring Mystique back but ditch the blue makeup, and favor low-cut tops for most of her screentime. Throw in Wolverine, plot sensibility be damned. Shake with global crisis. Stir in some more Charles v. Erik biz, and a spring of Quicksilver for garnish! The ingredients for great thrills are there, but in Singer and Kinberg’s hands, they become a recipe for disaster.

Box Office

From ew, Summer blockbuster season is officially here – and Marvel has continued its box office reign.

Captain America: Civil War opened in North America this weekend to an estimated $181.8 million, the fifth biggest domestic opening in history. As a result, Marvel now holds four of the six largest domestic openings of all time.

Globally, Civil War scored a total of $401.8 million this weekend, and after its select international opening last week, the third Captain America film now boasts a worldwide total of $678.4 million after just 12 days.

Even though it now holds the biggest domestic opening of 2016, Civil War, which debuted in 4,226 domestic locations, failed to surpass last year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. The Joss Whedon film also opened on the first weekend in May and earned $191.3 million from North American theaters. While some early predictions suggested that Civil War might become the fourth movie in box office history to cross $200 million in its opening frame (behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, and Marvel’s The Avengers), Civil Warended up falling short. Despite that miss, however, Civil War earned an excellent A CinemaScore grade, the same as Age of Ultron, which suggests that the clash between Team Cap and Team Iron Man should have long legs.

The big Civil War debut also reinforces the fact that when it comes to box office openings, May basically belongs to Marvel. Marvel now holds all four of the biggest May domestic openings in box office history.

On IMAX screens, Civil War raked in $16 million domestically and $31.3 million worldwide, bringing its global total to $45 million. In China alone, it earned $10 million on IMAX screens, putting it up against Transformers: Age of Extinction as the best-ever Chinese IMAX opening.

Disney took the top two spots at the domestic box office as The Jungle Book finally fell to second in its fourth weekend. Jon Favreau’s live-action adventure earned another $21.9 million domestically and $46 million worldwide. To date, The Jungle Book has reeled in a domestic total of $285 million and a global total of $776.2 million.

Garry Marshall’s Mother’s Day took third place, and the timely rom-com actually grew 8 percent in its second weekend, earning $9 million. After two weekends in theaters, it’s earned $20.7 million domestically.

As for the rest of the holdovers, most of them got steamrolled by Civil War. The Huntsman: Winter’s War dropped 63 percent in its third weekend, earning $3.6 million. Its domestic total is now at $40.4 million.

Fifth place went to Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele’s R-rated cat comedy Keanu, which fell 67 percent in its second weekend to $3.1 million. Its domestic total is now at $15.1 million.

As for the other superhero-versus-superhero brawl in theaters right now? Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice plummeted 73 percent, earning only $1 million in its seventh weekend. Its domestic total now stands at $327.3 million.

Here are this weekend’s top five at the box office:

1. Captain America: Civil War — $181.8 million
2. The Jungle Book — $21.9 million
3. Mother’s Day — $9 million
4. The Huntsman: Winter’s War — $3.6 million
5. Keanu — $3.1 million

Get Your '80s Nostalgia Fix Playing X-Men: Apocalypse's Old-School Video Games

From cinemablend, Since 2011’s X-Men: First Class, the X-Men movies have been set in the past, jumping forward a decade with each movie. For X-Men: Apocalypse, we’re heading back to the 1980s, and in the midst of watching the mutant superheroes dealing with Apocalypse, his Four Horsemen and other threats, moviegoers will also be treated to various staples of the era, including classic arcade video games. Well, classic in that universe, anyway.

To give fans a throwback of ‘80s video game nostalgia, X-Men: Apocalypse has partnered with SpacePortArcade.com to showcase the Retro X: Arcade. There you’ll find just a few of the video games available for Cyclops, Jean Grey, Jubilee, Nightcrawler and Professor Charles Xavier’s other students to play at the arcade in their local mall or on their home consoles.

Apparently this is a thing...

From cnn, Perhaps appropriately for the "Star Wars" universe, the annual celebration known as May the 4th (as in "May the Force Be With You") began with a ragtag group of fans, before being coopted by a vast empire.

Capitalizing on the phrase uttered by Jedi knights in the movies, fans initiated May the 4th festivities several years ago. Not long after Disney's 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm, the entity responsible for "Star Wars," it embraced the date, turning it into not only a kind of secular holiday for geeks but also a ripe marketing opportunity.

Disney and Lucasfilm have sought to maintain the event's grass-roots, celebratory feel, encouraging fans to host parties, dress up and indulge in movie marathons. Yet to the extent the day helps push all things "Star Wars," the company benefits by way of its vast array of merchandising tie-ins. The studio has also added a charitable component, using this year's Star Wars Day to raise more than $2 million for various causes under the heading "Force for Change."

Related: J.J. Abrams gives a big clue about Rey's parents

Disney XD, for example, the boy-oriented offshoot of the Disney Channel, will offer a marathon of Star Wars-related animated programs, including "Rebels" and "Droid Tales." The month of May has also been a time for "Star Wars Weekends" at the Disney parks, coinciding as it does with the traditional release dates of the original six movies. (Disclosure: My wife works for a division of Disney.)

Although it might be hard to remember, "Star Wars" wasn't always as ubiquitous as it is now. While the property existed in multiple forms, including games, books and toys, there were lengthy lapses in its presence in theaters, with 16 years between "Return of the Jedi" and the first prequel, "The Phantom Menace." Another decade passed from the end of that trilogy to "The Force Awakens," the seventh cinematic chapter.

Related: 'Star Wars' original trilogy returning to theaters for nationwide roadshow

Since its acquisition, Disney has jump-started every facet of the franchise, with "The Force Awakens" having shattered box-office records and a flurry spinoffs in the pipeline. The latter begin with "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," which is due in December.

The expression, incidentally, is actually traced back to 1979, when a newspaper ad commemorating the election of Margaret Thatcher as the U.K.'s prime minister seized on the date and read, "May the 4th Be With You, Maggie." Ever enterprising fans even came up with another pun for the next day -- more widely celebrated as Cinco de Mayo -- by dubbing it "Revenge of the Fifth."

Related: Han Solo's 'Star Wars' jacket is up for sale

So don't be surprised to see a few more Star Wars T-shirts than usual on May 4. For those who don't know off the top of their heads how many parsecs it took Han Solo to complete the Kessel Run, it's probably best to respond to the signature greeting with a simple, "Have a nice day."

STAR WARS EPISODE VIII Set Video Reveal The Millennium Falcon And Jedi Steps

From slashfilm, The final scenes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens took place on an isolated planet called Ahch-To and this beautiful, mysterious location was created by filming on the Irish island of Skellig Michael…which turned out to be a huge pain in the butt for everyone. In addition to being an island full of rocky cliffs and steps that made hauling equipment difficult and dangerous, the island is a protected heritage site. The production couldn’t even step on the wrong blade of grass without feeling the wrath of the local authorities.

Naturally, that meant that Skellig Michael filming was brisk and limited for Star Wars: Episode 8 and that the Ahch-To sets were recreated in Ireland and at the famed Pinewood Studios in London, where the bulk of the film is being shot. And despite stories of the production employing drones that are designed specifically to take down other drones, someone managed to snag aerial footage of a very cool sight on the Pinewood set – the Millennium Falcon, parked near a grassy set complete with some familiar looking steps. Yep, this is definitely a new look at one of the Ahch-To locations, although it looks like a different spot than the one where Rey landed the iconic ship in the film. Maybe the change of location has to do with the big black something located up the steps. It’s hard to tell what it is in this shaky, blurry footage.

Frito-Lay ruins 'Cracker Jack' by ditching "prizes" for something far, far lamer

From metv, It's not a trip to the ball game without a bag of Cracker Jack and the ever-important prize inside. Opening the bag as a kid was like finding out what you won on a scratch-off lottery ticket. Would it be a keychain, or maybe a little toy?

Sadly, all good things must come to an end at some point. Last week, Frito-Lay announced it's getting rid of the physical prize found inside every box of Cracker Jack and replacing it with a virtual "Prize Inside" that consumers can access on their smartphones.

"The new Prize Inside allows families to enjoy their favorite baseball moments through a new one-of-a-kind mobile experience, leveraging digital technology to bring the iconic Prize Inside to life," said Frito-Lay's senior marketing director Haston Lewis.

To access the prize, families have to download the Blippar app, scan the code found inside the packaging, and choose from one of four baseball-themed experiences.

That's not the only thing about Cracker Jack that's changing this year. The company also announced it's redesigning the logo and packaging. The new look will debut in stores this month to coincide with the first couple months of the baseball season.

"We are a brand that authentically reminds people of simpler times, childhood memories and family experiences," said Lewis.

With the brand removing the physical prize inside and replacing it with a mobile app experience, we're not sure that statement holds as much truth as it used to. What do you guys think?

Box Office

From ew, Not even three new wide releases could dethrone the king of the jungle.

The Jungle Book spent its third weekend at the top of the box office, earning an estimated $42.4 million. Even with Keanu, Mother’s Day,and Ratchet & Clank hitting theaters, none of them could touch Disney’s epic tale, which fell a minuscule 31 percent and was the only movie to hit double digits this weekend. Over the three weekends it’s been in theaters, The Jungle Book has showed remarkable staying power, earning $252.1 million domestically and $684.8 million worldwide.

Of the new releases, Keanu fared the best, virtually tying for second place with The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele’s action cat comedy earned a so-so B CinemaScore and an estimated $9.35 million opening.

The Huntsman earned $9.39 million to Keanu’s $9.35 million, falling 52 percent in its second weekend. The sequel to 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman now has a domestic total of $34 million.

Fourth place went to the Garry Marshall rom-com Mother’s Day, which opened to an estimated $8.3 million and a B+ CinemaScore. Its ensemble cast includes Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, and Jason Sudeikis, and its opening is a far cry from other Marshall ensemble comedies like Valentine’s Day, which opened to $56.3 million in 2010, or New Year’s Eve, which debuted to $13 million in 2011.

As for this weekend’s final new wide release, the animated Ratchet & Clank, it couldn’t even break into the top five, opening in seventh place with $4.8 million. Sylvester Stallone and Paul Giamatti lent their voices to the animated adventure, which only earned a B CinemaScore.

Instead, fifth place went to Barbershop: The Next Cut, which earned $6.1 million in its third weekend. The third installment in theBarbershop series has now earned an estimated $44.7 million domestically.

Really, except for The Jungle Book, it was a pretty quiet weekend at the domestic box office. That should change next weekend whenCaptain America: Civil War kicks off summer blockbuster season, and if its international numbers are any indication, it could be on its way to record-breaking success. Civil War launched overseas this weekend to an estimated $200.2 million, setting all-time opening records in territories like Brazil, Mexico, and the Philippines.

Here are this weekend’s top five at the domestic box office:

1. The Jungle Book — $42.4 million
2. The Huntsman: Winter’s War — $9.4 million
3. Keanu — $9.4 million
4. Mother’s Day — $8.3 million
5. Barbershop: The Next Cut — $6.1 million
