New Kubrick special edition DVDs

From Aintitcoolnews, "There are a few double-dips coming this year that I’m not complaining about. I bought the original Kubrick box set from a few years back. EYES WIDE SHUT isn’t even in it. So this year, they’re putting out four new Kubrick special editions, part of a new collection, starting with 2001, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, THE SHINING, and for the first time on American DVD, the full uncensored EYES WIDE SHUT. As Feltenstein said, “New management feels differently than old management.” In other words, they’re ready to treat us like adults now. Thanks. I appreciate it. And in return, I’ll buy the film this time, gladly. Each of the four films is sporting a brand-new “state-of-the-art High Definition Master.” And each disc is reported to contain never-before-seen footage. Evidently, the estate (most likely meaning Jan Harlan) has provided Warner Bros with documentary footage that is new. The films themselves will not contain new footage (except, obviously, for EYES WIDE SHUT), since there’s no new footage to put in. Feltenstein said that as far as he knows, Kubrick had all his unused footage burned. All that remains is behind-the-scenes, which is honestly what I’m most interested in. If you’ve looked through THE KUBRICK ARCHIVES, that mammoth coffee table book, you’ve probably got a good sense of how well documented Kubrick’s thought process is. If Harlan even begins to open up that material to Warner, the stuff they could add to these new DVDs would be fascinating."

One dude's take on When a Stranger Calls (2006)

I've had no interest in seeing this film (a) because the original was weak; (b) because trailer for the new one gives away the entire movie; and (C) pg-13 usually means "horror lite".

"I remember seeing the 1979 original version of When a Stranger Calls in the theater when I was a kid, and that experience was one of the most frightening in my life. It rated right up there with Jaws in my young eyes. When you look back at the film today, the first 20 minutes still work great. From there it drags for the remaining 70 until the climatic ending. Even though we really don't need any more remakes, this one had room for improvement. Had director Simon West actually watched the original film, maybe he would have agreed; but as he revealed in the press junket following the screening, he still to this day has not seen it. It would have been easy to take the original and improve upon it; instead he chose to take the script given to him by the studio and make the best out of it that he could. What we end up with is the first 20 minutes of the original film stretched out to feature length.

The film opens at a carnival that for whatever reason is smack dab in the middle of a nice, white, middle-class neighborhood and soon focuses in on the house closest to said carnival. As it cuts back and forth between the house and the carnival, we hear a series of phone calls between a stranger and a young resident. Suddenly a light turns on in an upstairs window, revealing the figure attacking. The next morning a police detective shows up at the crime scene that is described as "nothing they have ever seen before" and notes that the killer had not used a weapon, just his bare hands. Of course we, the viewer, see nothing because this is a PG-13 film. So what was the purpose of the carnival? Is the stranger a killer carny? Nope, this is just one of many pointless bits that are established in the film and never touched on again.

Next we meet Jill, a high school track star, so some time is spent seeing just how fast she can run. Is this ever used again in the film? Of course she is going to be running at some point in this film, but it isn’t her track star abilities that get her out of any particular situation. This is just more unnecessary set-up with no real follow-through. It turns out Jill has been a naughty girl and went over on her allowed cell phone minutes, so her father has grounded her with no phone for a month. Obviously, this is just a plot device to rid her of her own personal cell phone that could come in handy later in the film. As part of her punishment she needs to help pay that cell phone bill, so Dad books her into a babysitting gig.

Jill is dropped off at a house out in the middle of the forest with no other homes anywhere near by. Before Dr. and Mrs. Mandrakis leave for the evening, they let Jill know that their two children are upstairs asleep recovering from the flu and their maid Rosa is also home in a room on the third floor. Why they don’t trust Rosa to look after the children is never explained. From this point on it’s just a lot of phone calls and cat & mouse played by the killer, who appears to be doing an impersonation of Robert Patrick as the T-1000 from Terminator 2 Judgment Day.

We are left with one actress alone in a house for almost the entire duration of the film which, unless she is a great talent, can be quite painful. Sadly, I didn’t feel that Ms. Belle was up to the challenge. Her performance is rather dry, and I didn’t find myself particularly liking or hating her character; I just didn’t care about her. Her delivery made me wonder if she was reading her lines off cue cards. I will say, however, that some of that might have been attributed to the badly written script. With the small amount of dialogue in the film, I would have expected much better. The plot is riddled with holes that are difficult to overlook, which only decreased my enjoyment of When a Stranger Calls that much more.

When a Stranger Calls has its problems, but it isn’t awful; it's visually pleasing and well put together. The main flaw is the script that does nothing to take the story to a new level but instead tries to take the best part of the original and stretch it out over 90 minutes. When this stranger calls, you may want to stay on the other line."

3 boring pictures from Wicker Man remake

Director Neil LaBute's "The Wicker Man", is a remake of Robin Hardy's 1973 thriller. LaBute directs the movie for which he also has written the adaptation for.

The story follows a sheriff investigating the disappearance of a young girl on a remote island off the coast of Maine. His hopes of unraveling the girl's disappearance become increasingly uncertain when he discovers evidence of pagan rituals.

Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) **

Considering the impressive array of monsters romping through this flick, I figured it couldn't miss. Instead, I have to tag this monster round-up with my most hated of movie sins, one I'd never hope to see from a Japanese kaiju film: they're too stingy with the monster.

Can you believe it? And the reason is worse: they were trying really hard to be The Matrix. The human characters, this time, take undeserved screen prominence while the monster conflicts are reduced to cameos. And the humans are led by this guy, but all gruff and dressed in a military uniform. There's an elite squad of mutant monster fighters or some such, and it's lame. The sheer number of times they rip off The Matrix quickly becomes annoying. There ain't nearly enough spider tossing. Even the climax is too thin on monster action, as the story cuts between the final monster showdown and whatever nonsense the little people are up to. If there's one thing I expect from the end of a Godzilla movie, it's a good twenty minutes of uninterrupted monsters whacking the crap out of each other and knocking over buildings. Seriously, I want enough power lines down that I'm looking at my watch. The people are just meant to hang out on the fringes and go "Oh!" and "Oh! Godzilla!"

Not enough monsters. In the monster movie.

Here's a thought

All of a sudden it hit me, they should do a JACK VS. CLIFFORD movie! C'mon, there's Freddy/Jason and Alien/Predator, let's widen the field! A grown-up guy with the mind of a child and a kid inexplicably played by Martin Short! It writes itself!

You know I'm right, because you know it would end with Robin Williams's hairy fists just pounding on Martin's face, which we've all fantasized about since Jimmy Glick.

Basic Instinct 2 promo reel is X-rated!

Wow, if there was ever any doubt about Sharon Stone doing any nudity in Basic Instinct 2, this trailer will end them. Full of full frontal shots and numerous scenes of sex, I can't imagine this getting an R-rating without tons of edits. Check it out here.

Wow, I called that one! Update: "Sharon Stone's latest movie is too sexy for cinemas. Censors in the US have had to cut a steamy orgy scene out of "Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction" so that teenagers can watch it reports Bang Showbiz.

Britain's Daily Star newspaper quotes a spokesman for the studio as saying: "It is a hard 'R' rated movie which means it includes strong sexuality, nudity, violence, language and some drug content." Censors threatened to give it the dreaded NC-17 rating which would mean that no-one under 18 could watch it.

Although they found the orgy scene too much, the MPAA did allow a steamy sequence where Sharon's character is pleasured by a man as she drives a sports car through the streets on London at high speed. Sharon reportedly refused to use a body double for the sex scenes."

Harry Potter 5 starts shooting next week

BBC announced major casting news for the upcoming HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. Luna Lovegood, the dreamy Ravenclaw, will be played by an unknown, Evanna Lynch, who beat out 15,000 girls. You can see a picture of here!

Nymphadora Tonks, the shape-shifting witch, will be played by Natalia Tena.

Professor Umbridge, the incredibly evil Ministry teacher, will be played by Imelda Staunton, as has been rumored before.

Bellatrix Lestrange, one of Voldemort's Death Eaters and for those who read the books, has a much more sinister role, will be played by Helen McCrory.

Finally, the role of Mrs. Figg, Harry's next door neighbor, has been given to Kathryn Hunter. Does that mean the Dursley's are back for Harry Potter 5?

Tom Baker up for wearing long scarf

In a recent interview with Tom Baker, popular for his portrayal of the titular role in Doctor Who, the actor revealed that he'd be interested in returning to the series if the circumstances were right:

"If they could come up with a good enough part I would consider it. It would depend what the proposition was. But I wouldn't want to make an entrance just for a cheap laugh. I've got nothing against cheap laughs but I just don't need to do that now."

I believed this speech until I saw the picture of him. Where are his eyebrows? What has this man done to himself? It looks like he's gained a couple hundred pounds. He's nothing but a cheap laugh. I'd be really interested to hear what proposition would bring him back. I'm willing to wager that a stack of sponge cakes would get him to do just about anything.

Baker also notes that he's never actually seen an episode of Doctor Who. Though he may be fat, he's no nerd.

Marebito Makeover

I finally went back to the December post about Marebito and checked out the first eight minutes. Interesting, in that J-horror way. Coming at you from a weird direction. It didn't really get to scary, though, but the trailer (which I watched back in December) holds some promise.

While nosing around for images, I was amused at the wardrobe you still manage to get when you're chained in a cave. In the trailer she's nude, but here are two poster versions that make it seem a little more cozy. With the gauzy dress you even get some material to cover the rocky floor!

Power of the Dark Crystal

From Darkhorizons, "The Jim Henson Co. has set animated series creator Genndy Tartakovsky ("Samurai Jack", "Star Wars: The Clones Wars") to direct "Power of the Dark Crystal," sequel to 1982 fantasy film "The Dark Crystal" reports Variety.

Tartakovsky's Orphanage Animation Studios will take the lead on the CG animation elements for the puppet-driven film. Brian Froud has returned to design the new characters.

Set hundreds of years after the first pic, sequel follows a mysterious girl made of fire who steals a shard of the crystal in hopes of reigniting the dying sun.Annette Duffy and David Odell penned the script.

The puppets this time around will operate amid a CGI backdrop. Henson will secure a domestic distributor by the time the film begins production in late summer."

From Iwatchstuff: "The second chapter, titled Power of the Dark Crystal, will take place hundreds of years after the original, following a mysterious girl made of fire who steals a shard of the crystal, hoping to use it to re-ignite the dying sun. I don't know how they're planning on showing this film takes place hundreds of years after the first, but I'd recommend talking to Keith Richards, who's done a stellar job of appearing hundreds of years older.

But you know who's not looking older? That hot female Muppet from the first Dark Crystal. She's still looking like Gwyneth Paltrow hybrid with a cat, which it turns out is exactly what I go for."
