I dig this! The Star Wars vibe works in animated form more than I would've thought, although we've known this since the first Clone Wars cartoons.
Regarding the anime version, once in a comic book store I peeked at the manga version of A New Hope and was surprised at how well the mood and tempo was preserved, so I'm not surprised that this works. Although I can't say I care to see inside the TIE pilots' helmets in this fashion. Feels like cheating.
