I totally agree spiderkev.
I want this movie to work but it's hard to imagine getting excited about it in the wake of The Avengers
I'm mostly worried about these action sequences, because 1) the only other full-length movie this guy has directed is 500 Days of Summer and 2) the bits they're showing us are kind of exciting but as full-blown scenes might kind of suck.
"There are several cars suspended from the bridge!" "Oh dang, that big antenna thing fell down!" See what I mean?
Yes I do.
I used to make a similar point years ago, in conversations with my friend Jed (with whom I went to the movies a lot). We would see a trailer, and I would say it looked bad, and he would say it looked good. And I would argue, "Come on; think about what we just saw! Imagine sitting there watching the actual scenes in the movie that are implied by the brief excerpts they just showed us. How could those scenes possibly be any good?"
The example that comes to mind is the Travolta vehicle Phenomenon, and the shot in question was an overhead crane shot of a small crowd of people with Travolta in the middle of the crowd; everyone's looking upward with expressions of Spielbergian wonderment, and Travolta's got his hand up in a Matrix-Neo-style conjuring gesture. I was like, "Come on, man! Imagine yourself sitting there as the movie gets to that scene. How can you possibly be having any fun?"
