Horrorthon Countdown Challenge Day 7! Staff Picks! (That's you! You're the staff!)

Good morning, my fellow culture warriors. I hope you're having a good, relaxing Monday, because next Monday IT WILL BE HORRORTHON. YEEAAAAHHHH!!!

Ahem. Anyway, if you're like me you might not have thrown together a cohesive list yet, and a lot of you found last year's Recommendations post quite helpful. So if you've got a favorite flick to suggest, slap it in the comments and I absolutely, 100% guarantee* that it's Horrorthon Review Quotient will double, maybe even triple! (*Not a guarantee.)

To aid your quest, you may want to peruse the Horrorthon Score blog, the awesome Monster List of Horrorthon Reviews, or last year's Countdown post of recommendations.

I don't see anything wrong with repeating suggestions from last year, but with those handy links you can check to see if anyone took your advice and then act accordingly. Hopefully there's something from last year that might be worthwhile.

Comb your brains!

Oh, great. DCD's a zombie. You ever see a zombie try to use a remote? Pff. Lotsa good reviews coming from that direction this year.

Okay, for realsies, I'm going to re-recommend Galaxy of Terror because I love it so (and I just added my review to the Monster List, which hadn't happened because I wrote it in February.)

I also want to cheerlead forTrollhunter and Monsters, both of which I watched last year.

Hmmm...

I just saw Resident Evil: Retribution in 3D with 50P when he visited last week and I was shocked to find that I loved it! Mind you I hadn't seen parts 2-4 but it doesn't matter because they gave a perfectly acceptable recap in the first 5 minutes. Granted the acting is pretty awful and the dialog is pretty much unnecessary but the 3D was incredible. I have expressed hatred for 3D movies recently but this one changed my mind completely. Not only was it the first time I experienced zombies running at me in 3D (awesome) but I spent half the movie ducking from bullets, knives and a plethora of other shiny sharp weapons. Anyway I highly recommend seeing this one in the theater because it's pointless to watch it otherwise.

Also Crystal rented a brilliant silent Swedish/Danish movie over the weekend called Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages. It's visually stunning and it features the best looking devil I have ever seen on film. I recommend watching it with the commentary.

if you want a little humor along with your dark and gory, try gingersnaps!

I implore everyone to watch Lake Mungo - soooooooooooo creepy! I discovered a lot of great films last year and I would highly recommend The Tunnel, Troll Hunter, Meadowoods, Rare Exports, and Grave Encounters

joining the party late. i could blame the visit to the bay area i just concluded, but really i'm just a slacker.

process that for a second -- i've been procrastinating on posting comments on a blog about watching horror movies. that is right pathetic.

my pick is Severance. it blows my mind that there are only two reviews of it posted, and after i reviewed it last year, four of you pledged to see it. i don't have to identify which four; you can see your comments plain as day at the bottom. get at it.

i gave it four 1/2 stars, mostly because i didn't want Severance to get overmingled in the circle jerk of five star reviews everyone had been throwing up that week. it's not quite on the level of Shaun of the Dead, maybe better than Black Sheep, although it's hard to draw those sorts of distinctions. but i attempt to draw the distinction to let you know it's completely on that level.

For those who haven't seen it yet, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a fun little indie that's absolutely aimed at our crowd here.

It's sort of Spinal Tap meets horror movies (I reviewed it my first year in the thon).

Also, who has seen The Cabin in the Woods?

Any predictions on what movies might be popular amongst thonners this year? A few years ago it was The Orphanage. Then Let Me In year before last. What this year?

Santa Sangre and The Last Circus, you do yourself a huge injustice to skip these films, they are incredible.

Also someone please watch Fausto 5.0 I'm dying to have a second take on that one.

Oh and 50P is right, Severance is great!

We need some sort of cross-referenced list of all 5 star reviews, 4 star reviews, etc. And to be able to search reviews by reviewer.

So, like, get on that someone.

I didn't watch that many movies, but Burning Bright was my total fave last year. I watched it based on JPX's recommendation and it was great.
