Awaiting

 (2015)***1/2

Morris & his daughter Lauren live in a remote little country house in England. Since her mom passed from cancer it is just the two of them until Morris brings home an injured traveler. Once Jake regains consciousness it doesn't take him long to realize that something is off in their household. He is told he will be taken to the hospital in the morning and the reason being it is Christmas. Jake responds by informing them it's nowhere near Christmas but is shot down as they proclaim it is their Christmas. At the dinner table things get weirder when Lauren comes out dressed in her mother's clothes as Morris explains that it's the one day every year when she pretends to be her mother. After witnessing an uncomfortably long daddy-daughter kiss he knows he needs to get the hell out of dodge. In the morning Morris loads him in the truck and tells Lauren they are off to the hospital but instead he brings him to a nasty little shed and chains him to the wall. Clearly Morris is psychotic and Lauren is completely clueless and the only reason Jake is still alive at this point is because his daughter caught him in the midst of his evildoings. Meanwhile Jake's girlfriend is frantically looking for him with the local sheriff.

Any film that gets me to yell at the tv deserves at least 3 1/2 stars. Morris is relentless, every time you think Jake is headed for freedom this guy pops up and ruins his escape. Jake's a good guy too, he realizes quickly that Lauren is an innocent bystander and tries to help her escape her crazy dad as well. There are some unexpected "daaaaamn" moments along the way but the main thing you are "awaiting" is that well deserved pipe in the ass for Morris, he is truly a worthy villain.

Wow, sounds tense, with a good buildup to the PITA. If you were yelling at the TV does that mean it was reasonably well-acted?

Yeah, it's the dad he's such a crazy prick.

Good review, Cat! Yelling at art is an important component to art. At least that’s what I keep saying to museum security guards.
