Where's Wall-E?

From Geekologie: Every robot ever made (but not really, but close)

Check out the big version here.

Is it just me, or did they leave out Bender?

But hoo-ray for IQ-9! (Star Blazers)

Catfreeek said...

It's you, Bender is there.

I couldn't find Bender either but I love that he included robot Bill & Ted. I set this as my backdrop on my computer. I could stare at it all day! My favorite has got to be the trash can looking one in the upper right corner that was used in the Rocket Man serials (and other movies too).

Catfreeek said...

Ha ha, I set it as my background as well, it's fascinating.

Catfreeek said...

Not only is Bender in there but they included Calculon as well.

HandsomeStan said...

Of all the Go-Bots, Scooter's the one that made the cut?

They included "Bicentennial Man" (the robot of Robin Williams that's somehow even more annoying than Robin Williams)! And Maximillian from "The Black Hole" and even the butler robots from Woody Allen's "Sleeper."

I wish they'd gotten a better artist to do it, though. Is that awful?

I thought I'd found Wall•E but it was just #5 from Short Circuit (who's the same, anyway).

Johnny Sweatpants said...

I cannot for the life of me find the little fucker!

Octopunk said...

Losers! I found him. But my coworker Irene made the same mistake with #5 is alive or whoever.

This is great. There's a ton in here I don't know.

JSP, is that the real Rocket Man robot or the one from the holodeck on Star Trek: Voyager when Tom Paris was designing his Serial Adventurer game? And does it matter?

I've found

• "Brian the Brain" (Space: 1999 season 2)

• ED-209 from Robocop (I think)

• "The Box" from Logan's Run (God, Logan's Run was dumb!)

• The silly robot from Sesame Street

• The robot cat and mouse from Chuck Jones' "outer space" Tom and Jerry cartoons

• Huey and Louie from Silent Running

• The "False Maria" (Metropolis) and C-3PO are an item (of course)

• "NOMAD" (original Star Trek)

• Tom Servo (but not Crow)

• Wall•E

Jordan said...

To reiterate:
I FOUND WALL•E!

I also found

• The "Bad Robot" (J. J. Abrams' company logo)

• VINCENT from The Black Hole (another moronic film)

• The maid robot from The Jetsons

• The Tick-Tock Man (L. Frank Baum)

• A Ron Moore Cylon

• The weird robot from "Saturn 3" (Farrah Fawcett; Kirk Douglas)

• The morose robot from the "Hitchhiker's Guide" movie (the one with Alan Rickman's voice)

HandsomeStan said...

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide - not only is the Alan Rickman "Marvin" included, but ALSO the original "Marvin" from the BBC broadcast from the late 70s. The same robot also makes a cameo in the ehhhhhh feature film (it's in line on the planet Vogsphere.)

The only reason I know all this is that I happen to be re-reading all of Douglas Adams at the moment (on my new iPad - screensaver: large, friendly words "Don't Panic"), and the film itself just happens to be on IFC, which I'm watching, at the moment.

Nerd alert.

Octo it's known as the "juggernaut" robot that first appeared in the 1936 TV serial Undersea Kingdom and then it was repainted and used in the Rocket Man serial Zombies of the Stratosphere (1952). Leonard Nimoy played an alien henchman in one of his earliest roles.

Holy shit, this robot picture is drawing out our inner nerds.

Holy double shit, Conky from Pee Wee's Playhouse is in there...

Johnny Sweatpants said...

I think I know about 30-40% of them. And there are many that I recognize but can't quite place.

Johnny Sweatpants said...

Who am I kidding? I probably know 15% at best...

Jordan said...

Did everyone find Wall•E, or just octo and myself?

Catfreeek said...

I found Wall-E and also see the owl from Clash of the Titans, 790 from Lexx, Robot Chicken humping robot & Gir

Catfreeek said...

Also see Gnut, Robbie, Dot from Spaceballs, Tik-Tok, The Robot (Lost in Space), Twiki, The Daleks from Dr. Who (but I don't see a death robot), Don't see a robot spider from Runaway either. I could look at this thing for weeks!

Jordan said...

You know...that's a lot of robots.

Catfreeek said...

Jet Jaguar, *Batteries not included bot, Sentinal, Satan's robot, K 9, Bad robot & the robot from Heavy Metal.

There are a lot of robots Jordan.

Catfreeek said...

I am stunned at how many of them I know.

Johnny Sweatpants said...

I finally found Wall-E after staring at this thing for 3 days! He was tough to spot because his eyes look like the above robot's balls.

Jordan said...

I figured he'd be hard to spot because he'd be folded up into his "cube shape." But no, he's not.

Nice post, Johnny! I feel compelled to list the ones I recognize that nobody's mentioned yet (although I will re-mention just to point out locations):

Big robot from Laputa: Castle in the Sky (upper left corner)

New Lost in Space robot near the old one

Gort

Robot Monster (gorilla suit, space helmet)

Big blue bot from Ghost in the Shell series (next to Dot from Spaceballs).

Big Guy, all white and light blue like a 1950's appliance, just down and left of the Big Blue Bot

ABC Robot from Judge Dredd, just on the other side of Big Guy

To the right of Big Guy, I see two Dr. Who Cybermen and just below them Necron 99 aka Peace from Wizards (the red dude with yellow eyes)

Stupid Battle Droid from the prequels

Right smack in the middle, behind the Power Rangers' robot, is Robert the Robot from Fireball XL5 one of Gerry Anderson's early b&w shows. I've never actually seen it, but I'm a big fan of Space: 1999 and Thunderbirds

Just to the right of Robert is one of those two robots from the Portal video game, which I only know about from commercials

There's an old school Cylon to the right of WALL-E, and I think the slender one-eyed robot obscuring the Cylon's left arm is a butler robot from Caprica.

Preston the robot dog from A Close Shave is next to Tic-Toc, and next to him is the Android logo

Just below Preston are two robotic abortions brought to us by bad choices in animation. There's 7-Zark-7 from Battle of the Planets dropped in to pad out all the extra time left over after the good bits of violence were removed from the Japanese original. To the right of him is H.E.R.B.I.E., who replaced the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four cartoon of 1978.

Whew! That's all I can do right now, but I know some more.

Just below Maximillian is a police robot from THX 1138.

Below him, just to the right of robot Bill and Ted, is the snotty robot Crichton from the even sillier last season of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

Just to the left of Bill and Ted is the main character from that movie Robots.

Speaking of items, it looks like Bender is putting the moves on EVE.

Next to her is the Tin Woodsman from Wizard of Oz

The yellow robot up and to the right of the Tin Woodsman is the "magic robot" from Yo Gabba Gabba.

Down and to the right of the Matrix Sentinal is the bot from the Will Smith I, Robot.

In the lower right corner, next to the Sesame Street robot, is Muffit from the original Battlestar Galactica.

The lower left quadrant is filled with unknowns. Just in front of Artoo Deetoo are two robot dogs that I think are (left to right) Jimmy Neutron's dog and Astro Boy's (from the recent movie, which I only know about from action figures I've seen).

And just off Silent Running's Dewey's foot is M-O the cleaning bot from WALL-E.
