Man, that ride doesn't sound fun at all!

From USATODAY, The Superman Tower of Power ride at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom takes passengers up 177 feet vertically, then drops them straight down 157 feet before stopping 20 feet from the ground. Tragically, on Thursday, it also severed a 13-year-old girl's feet.

The Courier-Journal of Louisville is reporting this morning that the accident occurred Thursday afternoon at the theme park. The girl's name is being withheld because she is a minor.
From The Courier-Journal's report: Part of a broken cable was visible on the ride. Asked about the cable, (park spokeswoman Carolyn) McLean said "it would be speculation" to say how the ride malfunctioned or whether the cable contributed to the accident. The Courier-Journal is owned by Gannett, parent company of USA TODAY.

We couldn't find any mention of the ride on the park's website this morning but Six Flags often installs the same ride in more than one park; here's information about the Superman Tower of Power in St. Louis. And here's a site dedicated to chronicling amusement park accidents.
Update at 1:13 p.m. ET: Eight similar rides have been shut down around the country, the AP reports.

YUCK! That's truly horrifying. Dismemberment holds a top spot in my fear matrix.

I did that Twilight Zone-themed drop-your-ass ride in Disneyworld, but that was completely enclosed. Of course, we don't know how the accident happened. I guess a broken cable could whip right through any wall.

I suspect Lex Luthor!

Sorry, that was not appropriate.

Well gosh JPX, if you really didn't find it appropriate, you could have not posted it instead of apologizing. Sorry, had to call you on that. Wait, now I'm apologizing...

Remember the free fall at Rocky Point? It started off smooth but when you hit the bottom you felt like you were being stomped by a motorcycle gang.

Oh, 'de agony of 'de feet.

Sorry, totally inappropriate.

Wow, we're really outdoing ourselves today.

I never even saw the Rocky Point free fall, and I certainly never would have ridden it. They probably swept up a pile of severed feet every night.

I do recall a ride that started with a hard jerk that slammed us all into the hard steel "safety" rails. JPX got a bit sick on that one.

Oh God that's right! You know you're in trouble when the guy running the ride is wearing an Anthrax tee-shirt.

"They probably swept up a pile of severed feet every night." Hahahaha! So true.

The other Rocky Point ride that confused me was the one where you spun around in nauseating circles, and if you lifted your arm it would forcefully slam itself down. Gravity Ride or some shit? Also, their Haunted House ride was beyond pathetic. It was like riding on a conveyer-belt through a warehouse, with the occasional rubber skeleton or half-hearted maniacal laugh. What a ripoff!

On the plus side I saw a great KISS cover band play once called Cold Gin. The drummer was a 350 lb. Peter Criss who all but belched his way through the song "Beth".

Man, I hate days when I actually have to work and miss all this stuff!
Although missing hearing about that girls feet was okay. Yuckers.
