The Whisperer in Darkness

(2011) ***1/2

Albert Wilmarth is a folklore professor at Miskatonic University (uh oh). He is skeptical of reports that a severe flood in Vermont has revealed corpses of strange beings.  A farmer from Vermont sends his son George to try to convince the professor of the validity of these sightings. Eventually, professor Wilmarth accepts an invitation from the farmer to visit Vermont to discuss the peculiar happenings in person.

Adapted from a short story by a Lovecraft historical society and made on a tiny budget, this is a neat little film done in the style of the thirties and filmed in black and white.  The old-fashioned details are great, from the opening credits right down to old-timey script on the outside of certain sinister canisters. Suspenseful and atmospheric rather than truly scary, it was still a fun and different watch.

I started this a year or two ago but had difficulty getting into the retro-vibe. Also, for some reason I thought is was a comedy. I'm glad it turned out to be good!
