as one of the east coast jerks, i'll admit my commute home did take 1.5 gruesome hours, but the upside was i left work 5 hours earlier than usual. and if by some chance i don't wear myself out dancing at the holiday party tomorrow night, i can go cross-country skiing right out the back door on saturday. snow is fun!
Slogging through frozen sleet all day. Damn you anyway!
Every place I entered, I made the same joke of muttering "Beautiful day" and getting a laugh and a commiserating nod. And my shoe filled with water when I got out of the subway. And there's like a waterfall going on in the middle of my subway station because of drainage problems. And I woke up to the sound of the dude shovelling the snow/sleet off the sidewalk right in front of my (second floor) bedroom window. And the sky was gunmetal-gray all day. And the wind howls down Columbus Avenue like a moaning ghost all night. And there's a draft.
But you know what? It's New York City. And I love it rain or shine. Manhattan is trancendentally beautiful even covered in dirty frozen sleet. And you know it, too—that's why you're jealous and overcompensating with the wineglass and all.
Hey, it's actually been pretty cold down here! Last night I had to wear gloves when I rode my bike home, and this morning...
Pfff! Hahahaha!
Ah, I couldn't keep a straight face. Down here in my part of the desert it actually does cool down at night, but LA "winter" so far is more like the East Coast's "Indian summer," with briskness in the mornings and evenings and beautiful no-jacket weather in the middle of the day. That is, aside from the three days it's rained here in the five months since I arrived.
Come on, admit it: you're aching for some good old Manhattan grimy sleet!
Getting splashed by passing busses...trying to puddle-jump each intersection like it's that floor in the beginning of Raiders...hands too cold to fish out your MetroCard...all the best stuff!
(::grumble grumble:: bunch of California jerks ::)
I would love to have an excuse to move back to New York, honestly.
In the meantime, the coldness here happens mostly indoors, because the heat is so lousy. LA doesn't get cold enough for anyone to actually have a working heating system, so we end up wearing jackets around inside.
You should get a bunch of doorman/concierge uniforms with brass buttons and epaulettes and wear those around the house.
It took me 2.5 hours to drive my normal 20 minute commute home. I left at 1:30pm (the real time not the crazy West coast time) and everyone apparently had the same idea. Whirlygirl has an even worse story.
I mean, what snow? It's gorgeous here!
[Insert photo of me standing in front of an obviously-fake photo of a sunny day, but you can see I'm wearing slush-covered boots etc.]
Luckily my commute doesn't involve any of the highways, which were apparently as similar to the Blizzard of '78 as anything yet.
School busses with kids on them stuck until 9pm at night. Yowzers. Glad everyone made it home safely!
Jordan, I'm picturing Jeff Goldblum at the beginning of The Lost World standing in front of the tropical poster!
I just want to punch that picture!
blizzard of '78, yeah! getting groceries on foot and bringing them home by sled; building full sized igloos that stuck around; no school; quiet, snow blanketed streets.
at the time my mom was in her medical internship or residency and had to be helicoptered to work.
now THAT's what i call a snowstorm.
Don't forget that the waves froze on Barrignton Beach! I've never seen anything like that ever again. We were out of school for 2weeks and we were too young to shovel, woo-hoo!
Gunmetal grey!
Hey, I've got nothing against New York, I freely admit it's the center of our universe.
And before long the snow will melt and the fresh smell of hobo urine will permeate the streets of Manhattan once again.
I must admit, occasionally I do miss being cold and unhappy but then I remind myself of the time I slipped on ice and fell on my ass before learning I locked myself out and had to hobble over to Shaws to keep warm before Lauren came home. I was forced to thumb through Rolling Stone for like a half an hour. Oh the humanity!
Octo's and my Dad got stuck on 195 in the blizzard of 78, he had to abandon the car and spent the night in the Civic Center.
When he finally got home he and my mom brought all the booze out of the house, stuck it in a big snow bank, dragged out the lawn chairs and the all our neighbors came for a party. One of my fondest memories.
Octo never mentioned that story!
I stupidly decided to try to go back to work for 5:00pm. JPX told me not to, but I thought I was a superhero. I left my house at 3:00pm, and an hour and a half later I was only about a five minute walk from my house. As time continually passed, and I had to pee, I decided to maneuver my way into the Providence Place mall by driving on the opposite side of the road. HUGE MISTAKE! The mall closed shortly after, and I was stuck in the parking garage for 2 hrs. I made it back home at 8:00pm. I was never happier to see my house. I was anticipating having a hot chocolate and watching Superbad; unfortunately, my car got stuck in my driveway, some nice men dug me out, and then my roommate and I spent two hours shoveling and attempting to get my car up the driveway. No matter how much we shoveled, my car kept sliding back down. Damn East Side hills! Finally, 4 guys walking by offered to push my car up my driveway. It took two attempts, but we were victorious. They were my heroes last night.
Seven freakin’ hrs, and I was only about 5 minutes away from my house by car.
JSP, that picture…its fighting words.
whirlygirl, that's awful! hope you have a nice relaxing weekend to recover.
*twirls in* In belgium its just frosty cold with lovely sunshine *twirls out*
Your story sounds horrible whirlygirl though :(
Reminds me of the time I had the fantastic idea to take a roadtrip from Virginia to Niagara Falls last February :)
