"Peter Falk, who created one of the all-time great TV detectives on "Columbo" and was twice nominated for an Oscar, has died.
A family spokesperson says Falk, 83, died Thursday night (June 23) at his home in Beverly Hills. He had been suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease in recent years."

I like Peter Falk. This made me think of him in Wings of Desire. If you haven't seen that, you should.
I'm sure this is mean and wrong, but I can't help imagine dementia with Peter Falk being kind of entertaining.
I hate that stylistic convention about how actors "create" characters. In theater they say that the star in the Broadway debut "created the role," which is at least a little bit different. But a producer and some writers created the character of Columbo. Falk is obviously crucial and had an enormous creative input (and his iconography is connected to the role) but he didn't "create" Columbo...without him, Columbo would still exist but would have a different face, that's all.
