Captain Kirk at his goofiest since "I am Kurok!"

Bill Shatner

If you've seen the clip from Family Guy, then you must see this. The 1978 Science Fiction Movie Awards, ladies and gentlemen. This is a bit longish for what it is, but I recommend checking out the whole thing. It was the 70's, and it's impossible to divine the level of Shatner's self-parody -- and the level may actually be zero. From the applause at the end, it would seem there's no irony at work here.

One thing I've always loved about Shatner is that he's always had balls as big as church bells. His performances are done in such a way that you're never quite sure whether he's the funniest man alive or clueless to an incomprehensible level. As Octo notes, the audiance appears to believe this is the real deal, which might suggest that they didn't "get" that it was a joke. Or was it? You're just never sure with Shatner.

These days I'd say he's completely aware of the self-parody value he brings to the table; that's been clear since he did those Priceline commercials. But with the strange attitudes about art and performance in the 70's, I can't pin down what's going on here. Perhaps Bill got shoulder slaps backstage while people made Bukowski comparisons in serious tones. Who knows! They were probably all whacked out on cocaine and pricey scotch.
