Di Niro as a mobster? I'm not buying it

From darkhorizons, Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese will re-team for feature film adaptation of Don Winslow's "The Winter of Frankie Machine" reports Deadline Hollywood Daily.De Niro will play a Mafia hit man who has given up the game to become the proprietor of a bait shop. But he discovers that he's been targeted for a hit, and is forced to return to the business.Scorsese will direct the film under his deal with Paramount, whilst "Ocean's Thirteen" screenwriters Brian Koppelman and David Levien wrote the screenplay.

Why are they always, "forced to rejoin the business?" I mean, rationally I know there wouldn't be a movie otherwise, but can't they come up with SOME other plot point?
