Jordan mentioned to me once about Peter Jackson staging that nasty wizard fight between Gandalf and Saruman in Fellowship of the Ring. Jackson said that in every movie he’d seen involving wizards, inevitably the “magic” effects would appear and ruin the whole thing.
When Jordan told me that, I immediately thought of the effects-laden Dr. Strange TV movie that was made in 1978. I enjoyed it as a 10-year-old but I bet it would look just horrible now. (I also just looked it up on imdb – turns out the villianess was played by the same actress who played Lucille Bluth in Arrested Development, and seeing as I was just talking about her in my comments on the LOTR post above, it must be Coincidence Day.)
My point? That Dr. Strange blurb perfectly evokes the lameness of those horrible special effects. “…behold a stunning realm hidden beneath. One of magic and wonder. Of sorcery and enchantment. Of ancient spells, secret doors, and remarkable heroes who protect us from evil.”
Craaaaaap!
