I saw a long trailer for this in front of Fantastic Four last night (I'll be reviewing FF later, but right now let's just say I was hella surprised at how good it is). Here's why the trailer made me suddenly excited:
There's tons of animated adventures involving huge robots. The Transformers, of course, but lots of more kinetic stuff thanks to Japan's obsession with the big metal dudes. But how often have big robots shown up in live-action fare? I mean big suckers, way bigger than the new cylons or any Terminators.
There's the Hunter Killers in the first Terminator, the APUs in Matrix Revolutions, that pathetic ABC robot in Judge Dredd, I think there might be a Gigantor movie...there's that robot fight in Casshern, another Japanese movie nobody but JPX and I have seen.
I think that's about it.
Big, live-action robots is just a thing that hasn't happened yet. And it's about to, in a really huge way. As you can see from these pics of some of my Lego population, it's an idea that I like. Trying to coexist with giant metal critters like this would be terrifying and incredible.
And aside from the Transformers franchise and all that implies, aside from Michael Bay and all that he's done for the forces of mediocrity, this movie will deliver big heaping platefuls of people running around because holy shit, look at the freakin' giant robots. I think we're going to see stuff we haven't seen yet, and that may turn around the summer movie scorecard. We'll see. We'll definitely see.

Yeah I didn't want to admit it after all my protests, but I thought that trailer at the beginning of FF2 was cool too.
Whaaahhh!! Smootchie smootchie smootchie!! JPX lerrrrves the big T-bots! How does it feel to be Optimus Prime's man bitch, robo-ho?
It would be funny if I'd posted this just to draw that comment out of JPX, but I'm not that deviously clever. Not today, anyhow. I'm actually pretty amped about that movie.
