Danger, Will Robinson, Danger, I died! RIP Dick Tufeld

I’ve never seen a Lost in Space fan (I’ve probably watched it twice in my life) but I always thought that the robot was kind of cool. Actually, now that I think about it, I think I’m mixing it up with the Forbidden Planet robot. I don’t even know what my point is here; oh yeah, the voice of the robot from Lost in Space died.

Of all the elements that made Lost in Space a terrible show (despite the awesome set design, in my opinion) one of the worst was "The Robot." (I would say "Dr. Smith," but, without Dr. Smith, there's no show, so he gets a pass.) Why did they have a fucking robot?

They may have started with awesome set design, but things got waaaaay bad as Will Robinson got older. I remember an ep in which the "space mines" that pushed out of the ground were undisguised beach balls.

And yes, that robot was useless. Exploring other planets on tiny wheels, wtf?

This post title cracked me up. Wasn't that guy, like, crazy? Ate lunch in the costume and stuff?

Years ago I attended a collector's show in Boston that featured a full cast reunion from Lost in Space, except the Robot. Apparently the cast hated working with him because he was an angry, eccentric guy and, yes, he ate lunch in there. I'm not sure if the person in the costume and the "voice" of the robot were the same person.

Plus, the robot was an obvious ripoff of "Robbie the Robot" (who kept making totally-unwelcome guest appearances on The Twilight Zone and other places). The whole thing just sucks. Thank God George Lucas came along and re-invented the sci-fi robot so splendidly.

My remarks about awesome set design only apply to the Jupiter 2 interiors.
