TOS SE Recommended

I've reversed my earlier opinion on the new, enhanced "Special Editions" of original TOS episodes. The first season is out on hybrid DVD/HD DVD (too bad, huh?) discs, and, judging by copies of the earliest episodes, I have to admit that they're doing a great job. I just had to get my head around it and see a good reproduction of it.

Above, "The Corbomite Maneuver."

UPDATE: The original versions of the above two shots:

Wow, we posted at the exact same time! That picture is really cool and a definite improvement (although the old one is still charming). Only the first season is out on HD-DVD and you can bet that it will come down in price really quickly. I have confidence that it will come out on DVD eventually. At $350 for a Blu-Ray player I think most people will be sticking with DVD for the near future.

The difference between the two is incredible.

I caught a couple of episodes over the weekend. Mudd's Women didn't really do much for me but The Enemy Within was brilliant! I was pleased that they identified and captured the fake Kirk early on unlike most doppelganger yarns.

Mudd's Women is an odd one. It's pretty anachronistic. Even Trek's "eye candy" babes are rejecting the role; rebellious etc.

They brought Mudd back for another episode, "I, Mudd," which I prefer.

I'm really digging how retro-smooth the top of the Enterprise saucer is there. The TOS SE people are extremely respectful of the source material, so much so that their early efforts actually didn't do enough. But those are the people you want doing this. I think we know what happens with the alternative.
