Not such a Smart move
From AICN, "I've been behind this movie since I heard Steve Carell was stepping into Don Adams' radio shoes. Great bit of casting. Then Anne Hathaway joined as Agent 99. Another good piece of casting.
Now two more people have come on board. I like The Rock and it's cool that he's going to be another agent (newly created Agent 23). I think The Rock's appearances on SNL and his work, like RUNDOWN, show the man can handle comedy. Seeing him work off of Carell sounds great to me.
But the casting of Terence Stamp as an "evil leader" shoot this film into a geek mega-cool stratosphere. KNEEEELLLLL!!
Now let's just hope "evil leader" is more juicy than "weak, but kind in 2 1/2 lines" from Phantom Menace. Stamp is so cool and badass, he was even good in Electra. ELECTRA!!!!
Awesome move!"

I think it's great, because Terence Stamp is so fucking serious and it's Get Smart.
The same trick was used in "Strange Brew" (okay, not a successful film) where the heroes were Bob and Doug McKenzie (the two idiots from SCTV who kept saying "Take off, you hoser") and the villian was Max Von Sydow, behaving like it was a real movie.
Woody Allen is especially good at this trick. If you look at the earlier comedies like Sleeper and Bananas, you find that the more ridiculous the situation, the more he's filled the room with the driest, most serious, gravest actors he could find.
I love both of those Woody flicks, especially Sleeper. I recently tried to watch Strange Brew again after fondly remembering it as a kid and I'm afraid that it's now unwatchable. I loved the old SCTV, I wonder if it holds up? I think John Candy is a genius.
The old SCTV holds up.
I am a very serious SCTV fan and I have a lot of the DVDs. We could probably discuss this at great length and bore everyone else. I agree that Strange Brew is bad; the episode of the show with Tony Bennett (that focused on the McKenzie Brothers nearly becoming successful) is better.
Best modern Terence Stamp movie is Soderbergh's "The Limey."
(It also stars an incredibly hot young woman who later became a scream queen; you guys have seen her in one of the movies you did last year, I think.)
I didn't know about this movie at all, I think that sounds great. I can take or leave The Rock, of course, but he's not the dealbreaker I might've thought one day.
Kneel before Zod!
(You know, an hour after the Krypton Three trashed the White House, they were just sitting around in there doing nothing. Maybe their rule wouldn't have been so bad.)
No, their rule would have been bad because they trashed New York. I don't think they would have done especially well in the polls after that.
Polls? I know no polls.
Kneel before Octopunk!
No? Oh, oh well. Worth a shot.
