From Syfyportal, "The following contains MINOR SPOILERS for "Star Trek XI," the franchise's next feature film.
Now that J.J. Abrams has been signed to direct the next "Star Trek" feature film, what will it be about? One of the main rumors that's been swirling around the movie is that it will focus on Kirk and Spock's days at Starfleet Academy, but according to IGN Filmforce, that might not be exactly true.
The latest information circulating the Internet is that the film will examine the "first adventure" of Kirk and Spock together, though fans may see some scenes at Starfleet Academy (and possibly their first meeting there) as part of the overall story.
There are several reported reasons why spending the entire film in Starfleet Academy wouldn't be a good one. For example, fan reaction back several years ago when it was first considered was overwhelmingly negative. Several fans referred to the concept as "Starfleet 90210," objecting to what appeared to be refocusing Trek to deal with teen angst.
Another reason may be that Harve Bennett, who produced several Trek movies and originally proposed the idea, might want to get paid if they use anything close to what he pitched.
In an interview in a recent issue of Star Trek Magazine, Bennett said, ""It's a complicated issue for me. Right now, no one knows for sure what the next film is going to be. I thought it was interesting that the day after the story came out about them doing a Starfleet Academy movie, J.J. Abrams came out and said, 'That's not necessarily true.' I am assuming that the current regime at Paramount didn't realise that the studio had already bought that premise and someone went, 'Hold on a minute!'
"It's possible they might do 'young Kirk and Spock' and, depending on what they do with it, it might be something I might not contest," he said. "But if they ever decide to do a 'Starfleet Academy' film, my feeling is that they better call us because that was our baby."
IGN Filmforce also reported that Dr. McCoy will only appear in a supporting role, and won't get as much on-screen time as Kirk and Spock.
"Star Trek XI" is scheduled to be released to theaters on Dec. 25, 2008."

I agree; Starfleet Academy is not the place to hold a movie. Why have Kirk not in command? A cinematic version of the original Enterprise could be soooo coool, like what we've been waiting for with the OST redux eps.
Re: McCoy, it's not like he needs much screen time. As Jordan once described an average episode of OST: "The problem is fixed, they're hanging out on the bridge afterwards, McCoy tells Spock to go fuck himself and the show's over."
Oops, I meant TOS, not OST. I was thinking "original Star Trek" when I was saying "original series the."
