Absolute crap wins weekend box office

By Scott Bowles, USA TODAY
They didn't leave many critics laughing, but romantic and goofy comedies easily took the top spots at the box office this weekend.
Fool's Gold, the treasure hunt comedy with Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, took the top spot with $22 million, according to studio estimates from box office firm Nielsen EDI.

The Martin Lawrence film Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins was second with $17 million.

Although both movies earned recommendations from less than a third of the nation's critics, they met most analysts' expectations.

The 3-D concert film Hanna Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour dropped to third place with $10.5 million, while the Jessica Alba horror flick The Eye was fourth with $6.6 million.

The teen pregnancy comedy Juno rounded out the top 5, bringing in $5.7 million and bringing its total to $117 million.

"There are so many depressing movies out there, it's not surprising people want to go out and be entertained," says Sheila DeLoach, executive vice president of Fox Searchlight, which released Juno.

Ticket sales dipped 2% from last weekend and 10% from the same weekend last year.
