Hellboy II? Ya, I've Seen It.
From latinoreview, Last night I had a chance to see an early screening of "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" at Universal Studios. Being a fan of the first film, I was really excited to see what Guillermo would come up with next and he doesn't disappoint.
The version we saw was unfinished. A lot (like 85%) of the visual and special effects were not completed. It was an interesting way to watch a movie and when you see a film this way, you realize that any action movie MUST have a good story or else it has to rely on special and visual effects to carry it. *cough Transformers cough*
Lucky for fans of Hellboy and Guillermo, this isn't the case. I'm not going to review the film, because it is unfair to the filmmaker and the studio to review an unfinished piece of work. But I will say that Hellboy II: The Golden Army was a joy to watch even without the eye candy. Why? Because the story and characters are what carry this series, not the effects. It just helps that Guillermo's vision as a director keeps expanding and his imagination seems to have no limits when it comes to putting the most amazing things on screen for you to watch. Not only that, but he's a really good story teller to boot.
Scenes like the Troll Market, the fight scenes, the Golden Army, the Tooth Fairies (Christ, you gotta see that scene to believe it), and character driven scenes like one between Hellboy and Abe were really well done. The Golden Army sequence, even when I wasn't able to watch it in its finished form, was still exciting to see. Also, Seth MacFarlane does a kick ass job as the voice of Johann Krauss. ("With two s's" he says in the film)
Just wanted to give you fans a preview of what I saw. If I keep going then by the time I'm done writing I'll realize I just reviewed the movie without meaning to. If you're sketchy about sequels, I wanted to give you a heads up that Hellboy II is an enjoyable movie. Thanks to Guillermo and Universal for the opportunity to watch this film so early.
And for those of you who are curious (and believe me, I'm the last person to kiss anyone's ass), Guillermo del Toro is one of the most charming and nicest people I've ever met. In and out of Hollywood.
