That damn album better drop tomorrow! Can't wait for the fall tour!
$34.99 gets you a free download of the album today, a physical copy mailed to you before it hits the stores, a poster and free downloads of all B-sides and live shows for one year. Pretty steep sure, but I'm a very loyal fan. Lauren and I have hung out with them a few times and they've always been extremely kind and funny. (Another example of my loyalty - I continue to buy Red Hot Chili Peppers albums to this day even though their last 5 albums make me sick to my stomach.)
My initial reaction is yes - it's worth the $35, easily their best since 13 Tales.
There's no one else I'd pay $35 for aside from the Verve.
..and possibly KISS, but they'd have to really make it worthwhile.
I'm the oppostie with RHCP, I really like their last few albums and can't get through the early ones. The new Dandy's album is terrific!

There's a heavy Bowie influence on here. And Welcome to the 3rd World sounds like Prince or Midnite Vultures era Beck.
I'm so annoyed, my maiden listen was tainted because my IPOD was on song shuffle. Now I'll never get hear the new album for the first time in the right order. Dammit!
One of the concerts I always brag about is RHCP in 1991 with opening acts Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam, neither of which even had an album out at the time.
The last tune is 15 minutes of ambient sound, weird!
Running Freak wants it on the record that she calls track 11 - Best of All Saints as the best on the album.

DVD, sample the album "Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia" You might be familiar with the song, "Bohemian Like You" If you get into them you can see them this fall with AC, myself, and Whirlygirl. They usually play small clubs in Boston and they put of a terrific show.
My favorite tracks off the new on so far are "Now You Love Me'., "Talk Radio", and "Mission Control". I need to wait until I get home to give the entire thing a proper listen.
DCD - I believe you would dig the Dandy Warhols if you gave them a chance. 13 Tales From Urban Bohemia is definitely the place to start. (When I first heard it in 2000 I hailed it as "the album I've been waiting my whole life to hear!") They're just a good fun, summertime band that don't take themselves too seriously.
Any person I've ever recommneded this band to has become a fan. I took Octo to see them in Boston a few years back and he dug the show!
It's true, they're in my top 5 favorite bands ever now. I have a personal favorite playlist that I'll be happy to burn for you. 13 Tales is great but I think I might like Come Down even better.
After all the dust settles Come Down may indeed be superior. I like them all except Welcome to the Monkeyhouse (which was too 80's sounding for my blood).
I wonder how they'll make out with this endeavor. $35 is frankly a lot to ask of people, what with gas prices and shit. So only the truly devoted fans will be willing to fork it over. The Warhols fans are modest but very devoted. Because they're no longer on a major label, all the money will go directly to them.
The complaint about no longer needing record labels is that it only benefits already established artists. Up-and-coming artists complain that they can't get noticed without big money advertising. Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead already had a huge fanbase so they both made a killing with their recent releases. But do the Dandys have enough of a fanbase to get by?
Only time... will tell.

i'll have to listen to all the albums again for a more definitive opinion, but if memory serves thirteen tales is my favorite by far, and one of my favorite albums of all time for sure.

The new album has already exceeded my expectations. I would encourage DCD to start there if it wasn't so damn expensive. I guess hold off until the physical cd hits the stores.
I'm slightly irked by the 15 minute final track bugout that doesn't go anywhere but if you can solve this problem by pretending that there are only 12 songs on the album.

Also - check out the movie Dig! (The exclamation point is in the title.) It's a documentary that follows The Dandy Warhols and friends/rivals the Brian Jonestown Massacre for 7 years. The Dandys don't come off looking perfect but it's fascinating and very entertaining.
(The new BJM album is pretty painful by the way. Anyone hear it?)
Yeah the last track on the new album goes nowhere. They should have saved it as a b-side. For some reason the Dandy's seem to have trouble "ending" their albums. I don't think I've listened to the last track on Odditorium more than once.
That's somewhat true, at least from their recent albums. Gospel is the only weak track on 13 Tales. On the other hand, Creep Out totally rules Come Down and Rave Up is a kickass ending to DROK.
it's hard for me to find a dandys song i don't like. it's more a question of where it is on the like it-love it spectrum.

The Creep Out, (You Come In) Burned and A Loan Tonight rank among my favorite Dandy songs (all of which are the last cuts on their respective albums).
I gave the new album a listen online earlier today but I was doing stuff at the same time so I haven't formed a solid opinion on the final cut. Great stuff but probably not my fave album of theirs, more baritone and rocky vs. wall of soundy/techy like my favorite stuff (this is a very general description -- thinking of the songs mentioned above or the fact that I loved the 80's-ish Monkey House myself). I'll definitely buy it but probably not for 35 bucks.
I like Monkey House as well. There are at least 4 cuts that I rank as some of the best Dandy songs.
