Lady Snowblood

(1973)

A woman seeks revenge after her husband and son are murdered and she is raped by a group of men. She is imprisoned after killing one of the perpetrators and purposefully becomes pregnant after having sex with the prison guards. The birth has complications and she is dying. She resigns that her daughter, a child born of revenge will be raised as a warrior destined to avenge her mother. This child becomes the beautiful and very deadly Lady Snowblood who is on a quest to seek out and murder those who wronged her mother so many years ago.

This film is revenge done right. Lady Snowblood looks like a sweet little Japanese Geisha in her kimono, toting a parasol. No way! Concealed in her parasol is a deadly blade and this little lady knows how to use it. It is filmed beautifully with spraying blood offset by gently falling snow. The story is strong as well as the acting. I watched this film and continually thought, this is such a piece of art. A must see film that is definitely making my best of list this year.

This was a big inspiration for Kill Bill! I've always wanted to check it out.

Now that you say it, I can totally see the influence.

I think I own it, bro. I'll bring it home at Xmas.

And hell, there's entire scenes that Tarantino just totally apes.

Good review, Cat. It's a fun flick.
